MG MGF Technical - brakes

I know this subject comes up a lot, but a couple of quick questions.

Rover pads and discs or Greenstuff?

I currently have Greenstuff pads and am suffering from terrible shudder when braking, particularly from high speed.

The Greenstuff discs are grooved and so presumably better but do I need to inform my insurance company?

From suggestion on another thread I have looked at Buypartsby web site and they seem very cheap, are they proper rover parts do you know?

I would love to be able to change the brakes my self but am not mechanically minded. However I assume if I buy the parts a local garage would be able to do the lot in a couple of hours.

Perhaps not such a quick question after all.

Brake pads have to be approved for replacement, I would assume that in these circumstances the Insurance company would not need to be informed. However must be worth checking.

I recently discussed pads for MGB with EBC and they recommended Redstuff which is also being used on track instead of yellow.

The cof for redstuff is apparantly iuncorrect obn site and should be .4 rising to .5 when heated.

I had Redstuff on Scarlet for about a year - pad performance was very dissapointing. I think it is because i never managed to get sufficient heat into them - even after several laps of the Nurburgring.

From my experience on an F, Redstuff pads are no better than standard for day-to-day driving.

Greenstuff pads were also a bit dissapointing in my experience. There was a marginal increase in braking performance, but nothing significant. The best thing about them is the lack of brake dust. The worst thing i found was on 2 successive years, the Treffen and the Nurburgring together were enough to shatter the pad material (hence my dabbling with Redstuff pads the following year).

These are my direct experiences with them, others seem to like them though and they are regularly recommended on this and other forums.

I am now running 4 pots and 280mm drilled discs on the front and on the rear Mintex 1155 pads with drilled + groved discs. This has produced a much more significant improvement in braking performance, but is an expensive and radical solution.

So, it boils down to what you want from your brakes and what you want to spend. If you want a marginal increase in braking performance then Greenstuff should be OK for you, providing you don't work them too hard (the odd track day should be OK). If you want to run your car as a track vehicle a lot of the time, then you may get some benefit from Redstuff pads, but be aware that 'cold' braking performance is little better than OE pads on an F. Lastly if you want to make a noticable improvement in braking, then consider upgrading the calipers, there are places where you can source second hand official MG 4 pots for reasonable sums. But in this regard be careful as there are some pitfalls you need to be aware of.

Both green and red compounds have changed the green now are 650 instead of 55Odeg, which was a problem compared to Mintex, but Green are still not a track pad.

SF,

Is that a MS 280mm and what are piston specs.

I tried greenstuff on the front, with standard disks. There was an improvment over standard say 4/10 rather than 2/10

Then I replaced the disks, again with standard rotors but with Mintex 1177, big improvment. Say 9/10

The 1177 do wear the rotors, but whilst the pads are not cheap the rotors are. OK they don't look as flash as rilled/grooved/large rotors, but I very pleased with the difference.

Currently I am looking for a pair of 1177s for the rear.
