MG MGF Technical - Brakes (Again)
Can anyone suggest the best (cheapest) play to buy standard brake pads from, or of course suggest other tried & tested (& again cheap, on a serious budget unfortunately as we need to replace our fridge & my PC wants fixing, it never rains.) alternatives? The MOT is due soon & I suspect they will need replacing. I know that this has been asked before (about a million times) but I must admit I managed to confuse myself last time I wen thunting through the archives! Thanks all Sally |

We're talking just pads here? There are a number of internet suppliers that provide very cheap standard pads and discs. I can't remember the URLs and I haven't used them personally, but if you look in the archives you'll find a number of glowing recommendations :o) |

You can usually pick new sets up on Ebay from online shops like JRT automotive. Alternatively Moss Europe do replacement pads at around £20 a set. |

It's possible that the disks will want replacing too but I believe that that you can grind them if they are with in certain tolerances (Someone did actually give the details here last time I asked because we were told at the 5 year service that they were corroded ? but subsequant (sp?) MOT did not even flag them as matter to be attended to let alone a fail.) Possibly the dealership attempting to get more money out of us as we had negotiated a discount on 5 years service.) Getting them ground would be no problem as I work for the company that now owns The Churchill Machine Tool Co. Car is actually going to MS for MOT & service if the MOT doesn't throw up anything expensive so we'll probably just let him sort it but my OH thought that he might have a go at doing the pads. Rob, can you tell me is the procedure for replacing the rear pads the same as your front pad replacement distructions (from your site);-)? Cheers Sally |

Practically the same Sally - except that the piston in the caliper isn't pushed back into the housing, but rather wound in :o) There is a special tool you can buy - I see that it's on B&Gs website - but in fact, I just used an old metal work file I happened to have in the tool box - which is enough to fit into the lugs on the piston face to turn it. |

Mole grips on the front edge of the piston (Don't grip the rubber boot!)seem to o.k. too. |

sally I picked my pads up today from Halfords front and rear of the shelf. Then got the tool from the same place i tried several ways to push the pistons back but found the tool was better, All together it was about £60.00 and a mornings work thats if the wheels come off easey ? dont forget the copper greas. |
