MG MGF Technical - Break lights when pressing clutch

Whenever I press the clutch pedal my brake lights turn on.
What can I do to fix this myself? I already tried messed around a bit with the brake light switch...but, no luck.

Thanks in advance!

If you have an old F then removing and giving a _very_ strong tug to the break light switch will cause it to extend (by over 1cm), when this happens push the break pedal and reinsert let the spring in the pedel compress the switch- DO NOT lift the break pedel or you will just get the problem back again.

If its an old-style brake light switch its possible that its got to the limit of its adjustment.

Mine's a 1997 model and I don't know when they started fitting the "new syle", non-self-adjusting switches...

I assume you've pulled the plunger out and refitted it already....

What I had to do the other day was to drill a small hole in the top of the plunger and screw in a self-tapping screw. This gives a little more plunger length, which is what it needs.

I suspect we're seeing the bulkhead or something (haven't checked) bending slightly over time...

Thanks to both of you! Tonight I'm going to try this.
And, yes, it's an old F

Best to get the new switch otherwise you'll have to do the 'reset' again at some point.

However Neils solution sounds good for making the self adjustment into manual adjustment...

try pressing the pedal on the left instead of the middle one :-))
