MG MGF Technical - broken heater controls

On a motorway run recently the heater controls became awkward to move. I know that this has been documented on here before but the problem I have now, is that the controls have suddenly become free to move but, seem to be stuck on hot even when twisted to cold.

Any advice on parts needed if any, and ease repair would be appreciated ?

Dooh ! I should complete that at any time.

Dieter Koennecke

Dieter,

I will have a look behind the controls as per your link.

Miles,

It sounds like your heater valve has become stiff to operate and has caused the outer sleeve of the operating cable to become loose.
If you remove the driver's side panel of the centre console ie the panel with the footwell light in it, you should be able to see the valve and cable. Check the outer sleeve of the cable is still attached to the bracket with a clip. There is a similar clip at the other end immediately behind the control knob. To see that you will have to remove the panel on the other side as well. Each of the panels has just two screws.

Good luck

PS Miles

Should have said that you should also investigate why your control has become stiff to operate. Perhaps the valve is seizing up and needs some working loose!

Thanks Bruce,

I have had a look behind the dash and the cable seems to be secure. However at the point where the cable is attached to the actual heater (valve?) there is a metal bracket with a rotating plstic guide on it. There is a picture of this on Dieter's link. It had been disloged (proberbly due to me forcing it when it went stiff) resulting in no control and constant heat.

I have eased the plastic guide back into place on the rotating control and the problem is solved.

The heater control on the dash has always only turned to about 3 o'clock when turned to hot. When Looking at the cable position, there isn't any room for it to turn any further on the rotating plastic bracket. The main thing is the heater controls are sorted

correction, after a drive the heater is still blowing hot all the time !

I am wondering if the white plastic control mechanism with the teeth (directly behind the control knob) has jumped along so that the range of control when turned is hot - hotter. It seems difficult to get close to it / adjust it. Any ideas ?

Miles,

I'll go out and photograph my valve in the cold position and e-mail you the result.

Miles,

Sorry, can't get in to photograph the valve due to 'extras' on mine. See e-mail.

Miles,

Having trouble with sending you an e-mail. Is your address correct?

Bruce

Bruce,

thanks for your message. My email address should be correct as above. I have just checked my inbox and I have received messages today but not yours so I'm not sure what's gone wrong.
