MG MGF Technical - Broken zip on hood

Anyone know what I can do about getting a replacement zip for the hood windscreen. The rows of teeth are fine but the actual binding mechanism has snapped in two, don't know how or why! Obviously don't want to fork out for having a whole new zip fitted as guess this would involve taking the hood right off?

Ed Im selling a complete Mk1 Hood INLUDING immaculate rear screen on Ebay if you think its any use to you.

Ed also bear in mind that the soft top is only held on to the car by 2 bolts and takes minutes to remove.

I had a new zip fitted by a local Coach Trimmer - look on http://www.yell.com for somebody in the Bristol area.

Mine was recommended/used by my local MGR dealer - does the Brostol MGR have a contact for hood repairs?

2 bolts each side.

But yes, it is much easier to swap the entire hood (and frame) than to just replace the rear screen (and zip).

Picture of the hood bolts can be found here:

Andy, I hope you spent the due amount of time concentrating on your exam?
John Ponting

I guess about 40 pictuires worth of revising ;-)

Thanks for all you help. Rear screen has just been

replaced, any idea roughly how much I should expect to

pay to have just a new zip fitted by a Coach Trimmer

John? I've not really got the time or knowledge to

have a go myself. All this sun and I'm driving

round with the hard top on!!

If it's just the zip head then you should be able to source a replacement head, fitting should then be about 5 minutes and parts should be 50p. You have to find the head though!

Try softtop windows, they split zip as part of their DIY replacment, so they may be able to get you the correct size head.

Sorry I didn't pay the bill for my new zip (although I beleive it was in the region of £100) but I agree it takes a rather special sewing machine to do that job.

Try Wills suggestion http://www.softtopwindows.co.uk/ in Croydon or try a local Coach Trimmer for just a zip header.

this place may be worth a call http://www.krychtrimming.co.uk/main.htm although I do not know the Bristol area geography.

LOL :-)

2 exams done, got two more tomorrow (Thursday), then i have a little catching up to do assignments wise (2 outstanding) and i have finished the HND. 2 years on the GNVQ, 2 years on the HNC and a further year on the HND is a lot of missed MG time and i'm looking forward to a year out before i start a degree course. :-)

I don't mind exams really, it's just that they tend to be less about how much i have learned and more about how long i can endure the writer's cramp. It would be a lot more legible too if i had a keyboard rather than a pen!! ;-)
