MG MGF Technical - Bulb Replacement High Level Rear Stop Light
Anyone replaced the bulbs in this light? How easy , difficult is it and are the bulbs standard issue from any car accessory shop ? |
D Jamieson |
Dont know about the OEM but my after market is a Hella strip - should imagine it would take two minutes to replace. Ted |
Ted Newman |
Dave, the bulbs from the Hella strip aren't any standard. Don't ask me where to get. I think it's worth asking a Hella supplier. |
Dieter K. |
Thanks Dieter, I think it may save time and hassle just to buy a full replacement stop light :-( |

Keep patient, just wrote an inquiry to their technical service in DE regarding bulbs for *2DA 007 421 007* :) |

... surfed the Hella site. The MGF HLBL is listed as well for a Merc. Merc OEM P/N MERCEDES BENZ 002 820 90 56 Product code at Hella is E1 198. P/N is still listed as 2DA 007 421-007. http://www.hella.com/tocdocs/002/C078.JPG Bulb data socket 2x4,6 d, Power [W] 2,4, Voltage [V] 12 Not sure. Looks like this T5 5x20mm ? http://www.electriciansupplies.com/imgs/MINI_PICID29s.jpg The sourcing trouble might be the 'wattage'. Anyway, I'll see for the Hella answer in next week and put to the webside. |

OK, lucky evening ;) Go for spare bulb Hella P/N 8GP 938 026-001 W2,3W 12 Volt. This might be slight darker cause the original is 2.4 W Found in http://www.hella.com/produktion/HellaPortal/WebSite/InternetImages/wholesalers/download/gluehlam_de.pdf Page 17 (german only, I'm afraid) |

> Anyone replaced the bulbs in this light? How easy , difficult is it and are the bulbs standard issue from any car accessory shop David, thought your car was away at the mo? |
Leigh Reid |
Yeh the cars been away for a week. My other half has been in Aberdeen with it . I get it back in under 2 hrs ( and cant wait ). I noticed there were a few bulbs out in the brake light as she drove off into the sunset last weekend. I thought I could have sourced some bulbs and have them ready for the cars return. But never mind, I should take delivery of a set of M.S chrome MK2 hoops on Tuesday ;-) |
D Jamieson |
From memory it's justed clipsed together. On the other hand I'd check the electrical contacts inside before you go to source the spares. And if you have the chance... A pic is appriciated for the webside. Hope you got the car back ..... and only need bulbs ;) |
Dieter K. |
Not another one?! Alison'll really be pushing for me to get a set of those too, if everyone starts getting them! Do look fantastic though, and a useful bit of reinforcement in the event of a roll. |
Leigh Reid |
Meant to say, most cases of this in the archives are caused by a loose bulb, so might be worth taking it off and having a quick check to see if the bulbs are loose? Leigh |
Leigh Reid |
I will check for loose bulbs and take some pics for Dieter ;-) thanx for the tip Leigh ! |

UPDATE.... removed the 2 screws that hold the light and the casing to the body. unplugged the electrical connector and removed the brake light. On the back of the light there are 5 silver pozidrive screws. Remove these and the lens will come free from the housing to expose the bulbs and connectors. I noticed that the bulb that wasnt working had corrosion from water. I cleaned the terminals on the bulb and on the connector with the edge of a flat screwdriver, refitted and hey presto !!!.....we have a working bulb again. To refit follow the above instructions in reverse. Sorry theres no pics Dieter as my camera is in the office....DOH !! |

DJ, Interesting that your bulb connection was corroded. I took my high level light off last year because it was full of water. I dried it out with a hair drier and put some petrolium gelly on the bulb connections and the seal. Haven't noticed any condensation in it since but as you know the F doesn't come out the garage all that often in the winter. Also, noticed that the side repeater lenses are quite bad for condensation, particularly after the car has been washed. DC |

> Also, noticed that the side repeater lenses are quite bad for condensation, particularly after the car has been washed Check the rubber seals are OK. I also noticed when I replaced mine that each bulb had a good 'dod' of grease round the holder, probably to help stop corrosion problems. |

Great info, thanks for all the research guys - could prove very useful in the future!!! |

Replacement bulbs available form Halfords - check the wattage though, they do similar looking ones which have a different wattage! Jason H |
