MG MGF Technical - Bulkhead leaks

I'd appreciate some feedback on the page at...

http://members.aol.com/apttony/Servicing/BulkheadLeaks.html

If anybody has knowledge as to if this is a common problem and to why these holes are there, I'd appreciate hearing from them.

Well done, without the link to the 'home' far below :) leads to your own HD. :))

I think some of us should verify about the holes existance at their cars. I'll do at my 99 made next weekend. Though mine is dry.

Thanks Dieter.....I'll correct the link tonight.

Hmm. I can do a thesis on a similar problem. I finally rejected my 7 month old MGF for lack of bulkhead sealing and leaks.

To cut a long story short:-

The seam selant was applied very poorly at the factory along the bulkhead at the top of the footwells and round to both the A posts. The passenger (RHD) footwell leaked quite effectively(!) the drivers side less so. The sealant ranged from missing through to so thick it had dried and cracked. Same story under the bonnet especially at the seams around the 'little water trap' to the RHS of the heater inlet and the draining channel was blocked by sealant too. There was evidence of internal seam corrosion at this site and rust spotting on the passenger floor... I assume the seams were waterlogged.

To fix it dealer(s) wanted to strip inside of car, all dash etc out, strip ancillaries from under bonnet, strip old sealant off, dry out in a bake oven, reseal, put it all back together, 7-10 days work, GBP 2500 - 3000! MGR claimed it is repairable, true but I rejected car under UK consumer law. The dealer and MGR are now fixing the car.

To be fair dealer and MGR were very good about it and I'm now driving around in a TF and its excellent. Although I can't bring myself to look under the carpet yet!

Ian,

Good move, but DO look under the carpets! :-)

Considering that mine's an 'N' reg, you would think that by now, i.e. your's, they would have got it sorted!

Tony, there is a risk of water entering the cockpit via several areas ,I have found that a lack of sealing where the chassis leg joins the bulkhead can be a problem, easily fixed with a sealant gun. Behind the fron wing on the A post there is a hole that should be sealed and on some early cars I have found the sealant missing, both areas are easily fixed, the A post hole requires the under arch cover removing first.
HTH.

Mike,
Thanks for that. I've not had reason to look behind the wheel arch covers as yet, but sounds like a good idea.
Is 'the hole' fairly obvious? Not wishing to sound dumb, but for all I know at this point is that there may be several holes there!

Nice one Tony.

I seam to have an identical problem with water getting in and so far no amount of seam sealer or silicon sealant has stopped it. I have put all the under carpet back but put ity in a plastic bag to stop it getting wet.

Looks like I will get the silicon sealnt out under the bonnet next.

Tom,

In the interim, slip fresh newspapers under the carpets and change them every day. Works wonders for soaking up and drying the bilges!
