MG MGF Technical - Burnt-like smell: engine dust?
Summer is near around this part of the world. After driving and opening the trunk a burnt smell is sensible. Water and oil temp gauges indicate within normal parameters. May it possible be caused by the dust all over the engine? -looks quite dirty and I can not quite imagine an easy way to clean it-. Mike |

JM, I had the same smell from my engine recently. Two days later - a head gasket failure! Sam |

my head gasket failed recently and that had a kind of hot smell to it but if its more of a burnt rubber smell i fixed someones car last week with the same complaint it turned out that the aux drive belt tensioner was worn ao that when the air con was on or the fan was cutting in etc the extra load was causing the belt to slip if the belt is slipping it may be causing the smell may be worth just checking |

Anyone got any idea how much I should be paying someone to change my '96 MGF's cam-belt? Thanks in advance. |

Don't forget to check the gasket at the bottom of the oil filler pipe, it sometimes leaks a bit and the oil burns off the outside of the engine, smells like the rings are going and gave me a bit of a scare until I found what was happening. |
