MG MGF Technical - Calling all Gurus (clutch question)
just a quick one, would not having enough hydraulic fluid in the system cause my clutch to slip, or is this just down to wear and needs replacing? |
GC |
Not having enough fluid would cause the cluch to stay engauged, cluch slippage is always wear. |

thought so, thanks will, got a quote from MG of .................. Drum roll.......... £750.00!!!! 8 hours labour apparently, ive done clutches on other cars but have been warned off doing it as its a big job, What isnt on these cars!?!?! a garage doan the road can do it for £270.00, its well established and they treplaced the engine and gearbox in my mates F so i'm going to take it there and have a nice xmas with the money i saved not going to MG! |

It's a straightforward job for any mechanic familiar with the K and PG1 gearbox GC - so I'd definitely avoid the main dealer network for this kind of work! So what are you going to spend that £480 you've saved on? :o) |

well not technically saving it,just means i dont have to stump up as much cash. When the cylinder head gaskett went i wanted a MG Dealer to do it , as we all know its a major job and you need to know what your doing but a clutch is a clutch so i guess a competant mechanic should be fine. Thanks. |

How many Km's has your F done GC? |

GC, I suffered from clutch slip a few months ago and found that it was caused by partial seizure of the operating shaft where it passes through the bell housing bearing. The partial seizure prevented the shaft, pedal and clutch from returning to their normal engaged position. It was most noticeable when the engine was cold and freed up after a few miles. I cured it by dribbling a quantity of oil onto the shaft where it enters the bell housing. The shaft is at an angle which allows the oil to run into the bearing. Does you pedal feel as though it is not returning to its normal position? If so then check this first before removing the clutch. HTH Bruce |

It does when its cold and then doesnt slip when its warmed up, the pedal does however return to the top and it still slips, but like i say only when its cold. car has done 65k miles. |

Bruce you could be onto something here, where is the shaft situated? |

This may help... I recently had a complete clutch and gear box change quite recently. Had it done by the local MG dealership. Upon delivering my car i experienced a similar clutch slip (to the point where i couldn't even change gears!)which turned out to be a failure of the clutch pump. Needless to say i kicked up a major fuss and had it replace free of charge ;o) |
