MG MGF Technical - Calling the Mechanics!

Ok, first off, I'm sorry, but I could do with urgent help and you guys never let me down!!
Creeping over;

My collegue has a Fiat Punto (sorry again).

She noticed her heater wasn't working this morning, and after getting advice, checked her radiator and there was no (or little) water in it.
She topped it up.

On the way to work she noticed the heater still didn't work, and after a while the overheating warning light came on...

Now I've checked the dipstick and the water.. no cross-contamination.

What do you think it is??
I am thinking water pump, but I bow down to your superior knowledge....

Neil H

Thermostat not opening?
Steve Ratledge

Water pumps generaly dont go like this*, more lightly a leaky hose/hgf/punctured rad.

Check all the usual, just like the F.

Fill with water, make sure that the radiator is full with water.

Start car, heater should get warm, run engine check for leaks and more steam than you were expecting (expect steam for first 5 mins max, after this it's getting into the combustion elsewhere.
Will Munns

Check the hoses first, plus radiator cap.

* water pumps generally start squeeling, then they seize and strip teath off the timing belt, all a water pump is is some fins on a spindle, there really is'nt anything else to go wrong with it.

A duff thermostat will give roasting hot air untill the system boils over
Will Munns

You guys are legends - thanks.
Will go and have a look.

Promise to talk about F's next time!!

Neil H

It will be a HGF. I had exactly the same thing happen on my Punto and you are now the 5th person including myself who's had it.

Symptoms exactly the same as mine. No water in oil etc. No clouds of steam.
Bob Millar

Sounds like it is..

The symptoms (that I am unable to investigate as the cars not here) are apparently that you can fill the car with water.. and leave it (without starting it).

Later, check the water and the levels gone down.. fill it up again.

When you start the car there is a breif putt-putt-putt and then the car runs okay for a second before water squirts out of the water container again.

Neil H

Oopss, isn't there something like www.Shame.4Fiat.com ?
;)

Anyway, it's about cars, so who cares.
I'm looking for a replacement for the *good old* Ford Fiesta Diesel currently. (Sold to Egypt btw. Hope it will like the heat).

The next favourite was a Smart, but having seen how less of them reach 50k km without HGF, I think I'll go for a Citroen. (The new C2 has no HGF counts) ;)

Cheers
