Don't worry too much, the access for a cam belt change is through the wheel arch. I imagine that there is a photo somewhere on Dieter's site - he'll probably be along in a minute :-)

If you want to see how it's done - there's a video on Rob Bell's site - see
http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/engines/
and scroll down to Cam Belt Change.

It's real easy - if the engine is on a bench rather than in your car :-)

Remove carpet and sound proofing material from rear shelf
Un-clip the rear edge of the soft top and hinge up to expose access cover.
Remove 10mm bolts to access cover
Now you can see the engine.

On the Drivers side of the car you will see the black plastic cam belt cover.
On the vertical face of the cover there are 5no 8mm bolts, remove all but the bottom left bolt.
The plastic cover will now come off with a bit of a tug.

Now you can inspect the cam belt.
It should be in good condition and if you try and twist the horizontal portion which you can see, it should twist no more than 90 degrees.

Before replacing the black cover look at the bottom slot of the cover. You should see a rubber gasket, make sure that this is secure, it can get dislodged when re-fitting. the last thing you want is for this to fall into the cam belt.

In good Haynes manual tradition, to re-assemble, reverse instructions.

From your posting I assume you are in doubt if the cambelt change is really done at all ?
Due to a "design fault" the cambelt canīt be changed without the crank pulley being removed. This is heavy stuff with great torques onto the head of that bolt!
Dirt should be removed and marks clerly seen on the head of the cranckshaft pulley bolt. Easily inspected with a torch behind rear right wheel.
