MG MGF Technical - Cams
What is the effect of running a cam with a smaller base circle than standard? |
Steve Ratledge |
The tappets have to take up more slack (assuming the same lift) |
Will Munns |
Does that led to more noise, wear, short life etc? |
Steve Ratledge |
the tappets should pump up and remove the slack. (within reason!) Whay do you ask - Looking at a regrind? |

Thinking about using a pair of Piper re-profiled VVC exhaust cams fitted to a 1.8i flowed head. (One as exhaust the other on the inlet). With a duration of 264 and a lift of 9.86 they would appear to be a good choice, but they have a smaller base circle than standard. Presumably this is as a result of the re-profiling. I have the option of buying them at a good price. |

Sounds interesting Steve, would that mean selling the TF135 cams on? BTW - I can't remember if I told you or not, but the provisional cam swap day will be Sunday 5th June at Chez Bell... :o) |

Thanks Rob - I put it on the calendar. Re:Cam - just weighting up the options. If I went for the VVC cams I would definatly sell on the 135 cams. But I need to understand the performance and other effects from taking this route. Is Dave Andrews out there? |
