MG MGF Technical - Car not turning over, help!!!!

Hi, I'm just wondering if somebody can help me. I have a 1996 MGF VVCi which will not start. When I turn the ignition key everything happens as is should ie warning lights etc come on and I can hear a relay clicking but it will not turn over at all. It's like the imobiliser is still on. The car alarm and locking is working fine, could it be a dodgey relay as sometimes it will start first time!!! I've had a play with the ignition barrel wires but didn't find anything wrong. Is this a commmen fault, and has anybody had this before?

Any help would be much appriciated as I need the car for the weekend.

Thanks in advance,

David

Hi,

Yep, I'm with Pete as I had this happen with my '98 mpi, but not so much clean as the fem spade was loose on the male. As the spade is on the underneath of the solenoid which is underneath the starter which is halfway down the back of the engine, access is not easy. I put the car up on ramps and poked my way up from underneath - just about enough access to crimp the male, clean up and refit. No problems since.

Open the boot lid, take out the grill above the engine and look down into the engine compartment.

Slightly to the left you can see a cylindrical object, with some wires. This is the starter solenoid.

You might try tapping this with a piece of steel or a broomstick, as this might help. Another cause may be a old battery.

Succes,

Thanks everyone, I will have a go tonight and see if I can sort it.

Thanks again.
