MG MGF Technical - CAT
The CAT on my 96P MGF has split in to 2 halfs. Has anyone else had this problem. I have spoken to MGR and they agree with me that this should not have happened so i have to get it inspected by my local dealer |

How has it split? Longitudinally or transversely? If a longitudinal split - then it doesn't entirely surprise me - the heat shields on all older cars are all corroded along the length of the weld. If a flange has fallen off - then I am surprised. For what it's worth, there have been plenty of cases where catalysts have failed due to collapse of the catalytic matrix inside the cat casing - but I have never come across a posting here saying that the cat has split... Do you have any pictures? |

When I took the cat of my '97 car last year, the seam along the rear edge of the heat shield had corroded. But I was fitting a new CAT it wasn't a problem. |

What's the best replacment? |

I would say without a doubt that a bypass pipe is in order. I had one fitted by a small garage (as they had to burn the cat off), and it was great. Incidentally, you still need a Cat for the MOT - and I happen to have one spare - I don't have the car anymore though! Jules |

A high flow cat as sold by B&G and MS would be the best bet. There are approx the same cost as a standard one, may even work out cheaper. The benefit of one of these over a bypass is that you can fit and forget as they will pass an MOT, unlike the bypass. IIRC you can get them with stainless internals as well, so should last even longer than the standard one. |

Catalytic converters and their alternatives are discussed here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/catalysts.htm - along with rolling road results :o) Try Victoria @ the MGF Centre (much cheaper second hand). For a standard car, you can't really beat the standard catalyst :o) |

I was quoted £360 from MGR |
