MG MGF Technical - Catalyst on its way..
My catalyst is very rusted and it is now possible to insert my car keys into what used to be the bottom seam. As its going in for its MOT next week, I wondered if I should keep it off the road as much as possible. Mrs Baker has a round trip to Birmingham on Friday is it wise for her to take the MGF ?

If the casing is still intact, then you still have some life in the cat yet. Trouble is, they may must from the inside out if used on short journeys frequently (condensation build up- the bain of exhaust back boxes too). Taking the car on a decently long trip might not be such a bad idea- it'll help 'clear' the catalyst - and make it more likely to pass the emissions test. It certainly won't do the exterior casing any harm. If the corrosion is just on the surface, you could treat the rust and re-paint the cat with a high-temperature (manifold) paint to preserve it for a little longer - but I suspect that nothing is going to save it if the corrosion started inside the unit... :o(

Jon, Is is the actual CAT that has rusted? The small clip holding on the Heat/Dirt Shield that covers the cat, rusted on mine. This left a gap between heat shield and the cat. I filled this with exhaust putty, and wasn't until i got under the car that i realised there was nothing wrong with the CAT. Paul

I've had a look and the gap where I can shove the keys and its the heat shield only. Clips/seam is rusted away hence gap and hence noise which alerted me to the problem. Sara has been to Wolves and back today without any problems and the catalyst looks the same. The car is getting MOT'd next week so I'll see whats what then. On a brighter note my insurance premium has dropped £30 !

Just a coincidence.... My Cat bypass pipe has just broke, weld has failed, between pipe and flange. So probably time for my CAT to go back on. Just bought the two gaskets needed, but Rover couldn't sell bolts that i need (they come as part of the complete cat kit.) I've got Mike Satur's cat saver nuts, but has anyone got any idea what size bolts i need?

Am I missing something here, but aren't catalsyt 'shells' are made from stainless steel?

its ohh so quiet.... That's my CAT back on, what a difference. Now i can hear all those squeaks, rattles etc. The wind whistling through the soft-top, all these noises that i couldn't hear before.

Paul, Were you out at the weekend? Fantastic weather! Took a run up to Callendar on Sunday, though it was a bit chilly on the M90! Looking for a wind-stop now. Leigh

Sure was Leigh, just a bit further north, up at fort william. broken exhaust, so you could have probably heard me in Callander. Reg: SIL 7478, BRG with MS Quad lights. I have the Newton Commercial Windstop, and my heater is broken at the moment (stuck on) so no problem with the cold here. Saw one "F" coming back on Sunday Night about 6 o'clock. Got a few friendly waves up there, from MX5's, no F's though.
