MG MGF Technical - Catalytic Converter

Hello All,
Some months ago I bought a new cat for my wife's MGF, from a trader on Ebay. It was advertised as O/E for the MGF, and was cheap at £50. Or so I thought until the other day when I came to fit it.
Needless to say, it's the wrong one. The flanges at either end look the same, but there's a bent piece of pipe at one end. The one on the car is straight, with no bends in it. Also the sensor hole on the new one is much larger. Did they make 2 different types of cat for the MGF, or have I been ripped off??
The new one I have is made by Eberspacher, model KAT033, with the numbers 113460030000 and XII01 on it.
Does anyone out there know what car its for??
Thanks a lot,
Andy Mayne.

Yes there are at least 2 CATs but I'm not ideal to tell you when they changed; may have been wef MY2000?

If you look on Mike Saturs site there are references to SportsCats, Cat ByPass Pipes etc and there will probably be reference to when(if) they changed.

else, somebody like Andy, Rob, Tim etc will be along soon with the full SP.

You're quite right John - there are two types of cat available for the F. You've evidently got an early, pre-2001 model year car. The cat that you've got, unfortunately, is for a 2001 year onwards vehicle.

You can see the differences between the two systems here (if you look at the picture, you'll also see that the back box, down pipe and even the exhaust manifold changed with the introduction of the new catalyst (and second lambda sensor).

You have two options:
1. get the cat you have modified (chop off the bend, and get a new flange welded on)
2. sell the cat you've got, and purchase another

Bad news either way :o(

If you need another CAT I would seriously suggest MGF Centre (Wolverhampton) 01902 403045, knock 3 times and ask for Victoria. They sell mainly 'good quality used' at sensible prices. See this months MGF World if you need convincing.

D'oh! I forgot to post the link!!! http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/exhaust_differences.htm

Thanks for all the help. The diagrams show quite clearly that I've gone and bought the wrong cat. I think I will try Victoria at the MGF Centre (any excuse to visit!!)
BTW, does anybody want a cat. for a 2001> MGF/TF. I know where there's one really cheap!!

Andy,

Put it back on e-bay.

I bought 3 mountain bike handle bars for £5, put one of them on my bike and re-sold the 3 I had left over for £6!

A Mayne,

I purchased a the same item via ebay - however I noticed just prior to sending the monies that it was a different model with the elbow bend and attachment for 2nd lamda sensor? the guy seemed pretty reasonable when I pointed this out and that I wasn't going to complete the sale. May worth asking for a refund - you never know.

Or you could just use it as a great excuse to buy a sports exhaust (just remember to get a MY2K Compatable one!!!
