MG MGF Technical - Catalytic Converter Remover

Hi, I have a 97 MGF VVC. My car failed last week on a dodgy Catalytic Converter. I have boiught a new one and intend to fit it myself.... are they easy to fit and has anyone got a step by step guide I can get hold of??

Also, my plastic rear window has split. Is there any way of repairing it as opposed to forking out a £100 for a new one???

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks, Andy

Andy,

If the nuts holding the existing CAT in place are coroded, you will find it EXTREMELY difficult to remove.

I would suggest you get your local exhaust outfit to do it for you for a contribution to their charity tin.

When having the new one fitted, you should invest in a set of 6 "cat saver" nuts available from one of the many MGF specialists, which will make life easier the next time.

Best regards,

Andy,

With regard to your cracked rear screen...

You'll be lucky if you can have it repaired for £100, but there is no other practical alternative.

Why have it repaired for a £100 when you can get new ones fitted for about £110?

If you need info/links just let me know and I'll try to dig some out.

Your best bet for info would be to register on here (it's completely free) and then search the BBS Archives!

The archives are probably one of the most comprehensive sources of MG info you will find anywhere and well worth the two seconds to register.

Unzip your rear screen and send it to Soft Tops of Croydon, Surrey. They will replace it completely for £90.00 ! (MG Rover price £470.00). Just had mine done and they made a fantastic job !

The cheapest way to repair a split rear screen permanently is by applying a UPVC glue to the sides of the split. Work in dry weather or the joint will be weak and take care to avoid drips of glue. They will permanently damage the surface of the screen and can also remove paint.

Forget trying to remove the nuts on the cat, just grind them off. on the original cat the nuts were on studs, so this is a one way process... but as you don't intend to refit the dead cat - who cares if you damage it?

Not a hard job to do. Worst bit is getting to old cat off. Try to crack off the 6 nuts that hold it in place or remove the exhaust section as well. Replacement cats are £100 MAX includind kit. Do NOT use any putty/paste when re-asembling as this knackers the cat. Should take about 1 1/2hrs on a sunny day.Use cat-saver nuts on rebuild. Why are you changing the cat ?. My one was knackered and the car would not rev above 5000. On removal it looked like a old BBQ. What a change to the car on rebuild.
