MG MGF Technical - CD multi changers

'96 VVC

Hi all,

Excuse my ignorance but does the CD multi changer that "should" sit in the boot have just one 12-pin connection to it? Is it powered through this connector? I have this lead in my boot, but no unit. The head unit is MG branded. If I were to buy one, do all base units only require this single 12-pin connector? And does anyone have a unit for sale?

:o)

Yes there is only one connector that goes to the cd changer therefore powered through it as well. In answer to your third question I couldn't say as mine is the MG branded changer compatable with the standard MG head unit.

MG head unit & CD Changer (Philips I think) were made specifically for the F and are not cross compatible with any other systems IIRC. From what I can see you have the following options;
1. Pay through the nose for the OEM changer from MGR
2. Hang out until one appears on ebay (which they do from time to time)
3. Replace the head unit with something else that will be a little more flexible and accept a wider range of changers (probably still cheaper than option 1)
4. Get an MP3/CD head unit and never look back, 8 albums on 1 disc. Not much use if you don't have regular access to a computer with a CD burner.

Sony make changers with adapters to talk to the F's Philips head unit (note that MY2K cars were a Blaupunkt one). Have a look here...

Useful site that Tim! :o)

CD autochanger in the F is also shared with the autochanger fitted to contempary Rover and LandRover products, so if you source a second hand item from a breakers yard, then it *should* work!

Thanks very much for all your help.

So I can just slam in a SON-ALRS003M for £139 and I'm away. I hope Santa reads this BBS ;o)

Thanks again and a Merry Christmas to all,

Matt.

I've also seen changers at autojumbles - the last one I went to in Epsom had a stall selling 20-30 which were taken from insurance writeoffs. He was selling them for £30 each!

Oh, forgot to say - careful if you order, Matt, the SON-ALRS003M looks like it might be for the MY2K Blaupunkt head unit. You might need the SON-ALRS001M which it says is for Philips head units...best check with them first!

Thx for the word of warning Tim.

Fools rush in, and all that...

Matt,

You should still consider changing the head unit to something like a Kenwood or Alpine.

You can pick up amazing "package" deals which include the head unit and CD changer for around £200.

If you go for a 6CD Kenwood changer - it will fit in the glove box, making the wiring much easier.

Have a great Christmas!

Or as Phil suggested replace the head unit with one that plays MP3s. I had a 10 disc CD Changer in the boot. It took up quite a lot of space and I never remembered to change the CDs which was a bit annoying as time went on. I've replaced it with a Kenwood unit that plays MP3s. Now I can keep about 6 discs each with about 8 albums on them in the car and it's a dodle to swap them over. Of course this is all very well assuming that you can burn discs yourself. If not I'd go for Sam's suggestion or buy yourself a CD Writer.
