MG MGF Technical - Central Locking Snags

Hi everyone,

A bit of a strange problem has developed on my VVC - when I try to lock the car it only does the first lock ie the same as pressing the lock button once instead of twice. At the same time the interior lights are not going off and so I'm a little concerned that I'll be needing a new battery tomorrow! Any ideas?

Thanks

Dave Turner

P.S. Does anyone know where I can get hold of a driver's side interior mat (carpet not rubber) without spending a fortune on the pair?

David Turner

Sounds like the micro-switch in the door lock is about to say adios, hence the interior lights playing up too. A replacement is about 90 quid as I recall because in typical Rover style, you have to buy the entire sealed-unit door lock, not just the 20p micro switch >:-(
Make sure you get the right part number for your year of car as well, because there are minor differences apparently.

And no, absolutely no one in the English speaking world knows where to get single mats, or if they do, they're keeping it a very closely guarded secret and thus will die much, much poorer than they could.

Hi dave what a coincidence tonight my superlocking was playing up i pressed the blipper and it locked thcar no probs when I press the Blipper a 2nd time nothing, thats the current state of play it did however before just before failing, superlocked but the indicators only flashed 3 times instead of 5 and the the alarm would go off ten minutes or so later.
I have just searched the Archives and found this

There is a weak spot in the wiring loom in the luggage compartment. The loom is bifurcated near the left side hinge and the spur that loops across to the lock and light in the boot lid can fray and short out. Find the Y join and pull the outer away for a few inches and then check the individual wires very carefully. A break is not always easy to find. This can cause fuses to blow and/or alarm problems. On mine it was just blowing fuses which affected interior lights, clock, radio etc

hopr it helps I will be checking my loom in the boot tommorow

Thanks for the help - I'll go and check the luggage compartment now. As an aside the alarm has been going off spuriously as well so maybe this will help!

Sussed, the wiring loom had been chewed by the bonnet hinge L/H side. The last owner had cut right through the loom, they had taped up the ends and shoved it back into the corrugated loom cover,so in essence my loom at the back was completely Dis, no wonder my boot light wasn't working, anyway joined all the wires back together again and fingers crossed it seems to be ok now, the boot light now works i noticed the ends of the wires were corroded i think they were shorting somewhere. The car now superlocks the indicators flash 3 times after super locking I think that is the norm not 5 has i previously stated.
Hope you got yours sorted too

Does every MGF have this 2 stage alarm-locking procedure?
Since I have had my VVC I have never understood the superlocking element people talk of on this site.

Have I got the same problem?

On a few occasions my central locking has only locked (or unlocked) one door!!?? Unlocking (or locking) the car and trying again has sorted the problem. It is, of course, a sod's law sort of problem that won't EVER occur when there's an MGR techie around!!!

Could it be as simple as the zapper needing a new battery, guys????
