MG MGF Technical - Change of breakpads MGF

Hi everyone!

I just changed the brakepads on my MGF 98 VVC for the first time! I ordered the pads from Unipart or whatever so it is original parts from rover.

Problem after having installed the brakepads:
More squealing noise than prior to the installation!

I tried 2 times adding copper grease on the correct places and as I only got the pads and no anti-rattling plate or anything as such with the new brakepads I bought myself some "anti-rattle" kind of material with adhesive on the back. After having installed the squealing noise is unfortunately louder than before.

Do I need to do som de-glazing of the breakdiscs?
Could the hiss or squealing noise occur due to that the pads are new? Please help! I am getting tired after having changed it twice in one day... :(

Kind regards,

Philip B

Hi Philip,

Are the discs badly grooved? That can produce extra squealing on new pads, which will reduce as the pads bed into the grooves but generally a better solution is to fit new discs.

I'd just make sure that the pads can move freely in their grooves in the caliper, but it is unusual for standard pads to squeal. It is possible that they're just bedding in at the moment...?

Do you really know that you have Original MG Parts ??
Unipart were originally suppliers of British Leyland aftermarket parts but do you know where their MG parts come from today ??
Do we not fit MG from X-Parts, EBC or Mintex ??

The original pads I've had all have Lucas leaflets in them so would appear to be supplied by Lucas.

Standard brakes are all Lucas Girling, so it certainly seems that you have standard pads. How's the squealing now? It should pass - I presume that you've replaced them all (all 8 pads)? And the discs are in good condition and not too worn?
