MG MGF Technical - Changing Clock Time Seems To Blow Fuse
Hi, I rarely drive the F, so when I did on Friday I noticed that I hadn't 'turned the clock back' because of going from BST to GMT -So I did. However, I then noticed that I couldn't 'double lock' the car and the interior lights have stopped working. I have checked the 15 Amp Fuse (No. 12) and found it had blown, on replacing it it blew on locking the car. On replacing that one it blew while I was inserting it. So the question is, could the clock be blowing the fuse, if so how can I check and fix it. Also why would this cause the double locking problem - or is this due to something else? Thankyou for your assistance, (:() |

Pete I'm at work at the moment (one reason that I wish I hadn't chosen IT back in 1973 - mind you, it was still called EDP or Electronic Data Processing in those days) but will check the drivers handbook asap to see what fuse 12 protects. Normally I would nip outside and look but I've used the bike today. |

Fuse 12 feeds the clock, footwell lights, interior light, radio/cassette, bonnet lamp and boot lamp and also supplies a feed to the Alarm LED. I imagine when changing the time you pressed quite hard against the face of the clock and some wiring at the rear of the clock has shorted to the chassis. Remove the central airvent by prising it carefully out at the lower edge with a blunt flat blade. You will then be able to look down at the rear of the clock to check for chafed wires etc. Hope this helps Bruce |

Thanks to you both. Bruce I will give it a go and come back to you... |

After many hours I think it's now fixed... (:)) It appears that the F's had a known problem with the wiring loom at the back of the radio shorting out against the support pillar in the central console - because it has a kink in it! It seems that on applying pressure on the clock I pushed the center console in enough to 'cut' the wire sheath and hence short it out - doh Asking around it seems that this has occurred to other F's and that your local MG Rover dealer is aware it can happen - and fix it at a price… Thanks to those who helped - safe motoring, Pete |

Thanks for coming back with the final diagnosis and safe motoring to you too! Bruce |

So how much do MGR dealers charge to fit a strip of insulation tape? |
