MG MGF Technical - chrome strips on top of the rear deck
Hi, Have searched the archive but can't find the answer. I have found a tiny bit of surface rust underneath one of the chrome strips on top of the rear deck. There are two large screws/bolts holding it to the body work. My question is simple, is this chrome strip merely trim and just a matter of unscrewing it to remove it. Or does it actually hold anything in place? I want to deal with the rust before the winter starts and don't want the back end of the car falling off when I unscrew the strip.......sorry I'm not very mechanically minded. Iain |

I _think_ that they simply cover the body seams, and are purely decorative. |

iain take out the torx and the just lift off. they can gather metal fillings and salty deposits under . take them off and coat them in a rust preservative twice a year . you can get a lot of rust forming (as in mine ) and yes they are only for decoration gerry |

Thanks, looks like I've got no excuses for not getting on with it. Ah well, guess what i'll be doing this weekend then! Iain |

Hi, Rust... ? ;) btw, cause it's fits to the subject. Found this at my 99 made on last weekend while doing the 80k km Service (DIY) http://www.mgfcar.de/rust/hood_frame_rear_opened_DSC02205.jpg I don't think any dealer will remove and apply rust protection like Hammerite or anything else while having annual service. Have a look yourself. Anyway, the chrome slides collect dust and mud below if the huge bolts are loose or over tightened. There's a 1mm thin _nylon like_ seal below it. |

sorry to panic you about the rust at the strips but i found what looked like rock salt deposits that had reformed into crystals and they were starting to eat into the paint. having the body stripped down we found a lot of surface rust under front and rear bumpers that if caught early should present no probs. work for a weekend. ive taken this time to fill the channels at the strips and do away with the chrome as there is going to be very little on the car ( i dont want to blind other drivers !!!!) gerry |

Not just you Andy - my F is currently as nature intended although it may need a bit of a waxing round the edges! |

Andy, looks like Gerry has got the stripey 'Fenomenon' as a result of the de-chroming though, lol. Mike |

On the subject of rust, I waxoyled a 6 years old MGF last weekend. There were a few rust spots starting underneath, nothing to worry about but thought it was worth treating. Removed the front wheel liners, and removed the muck from behind the front wheels, this was not too bad as I had used tape to "seal" between the mud flaps and wheel liner. The TF looks worse than the F for collecting muck behind the front wheels though. |

>>The TF looks worse than the F for collecting muck behind the front wheels though. Why is that then? TF's don't have wheel arch liners. |

Is this the 'muck behind the front wheels' you were referring to? >> http://www.sfforever.co.uk/viewgallerypicture.asp?id=31-41-197-198-199-200-201-202-203-204-205-206-207-208-209-210-211-212-213-214-217-218-219-220-221-222-223-224-225-226-227-228-229-230-231-232-233-234-235-236-237-238-239&queryon=21 << SF |

Looks just like mine, same colour too. I took the liners off the other week and pressure washed the wheel arches, let 'em dry in the sunshine (where did that go?) then sprayed waxoyl on them. |
