MG MGF Technical - Clunking noise is back
Hi all, There's been a problem with a strange clunking noise coming from the back of the car for a while, it happens when you start moving from stationary (parked or just stopped) the car moves off, then theres a clunk like something's loose and moving to one extreme? probably within about 1 revolution of the wheels, it happenes when the engine is hot or cold, happened a lot on the training day at Northwealds, didn't happen at kemble, but has been getting more noticeable lately. The stregnth of the clunk seems to vary too. It didn't start coinciding with anything i've done, and the tracking seems fine looking at tyre wear/handling. Any ideas? |

I had something similar, but with a squeak over bumps and ruts. It transpired that the wishbone bolts were a little loose, and since this has been sorted at the last service, the car has been clunk free. So this may be an area worth getting checked out, along with the condition of the engine steady bush Kingsley. |

Are these items self checkable Rob? |
Kingsley |
Not really, as far as I know. Let's see what other folks have to say... |

Have you done the obvious and checked the shocks bushes? Ted |

I'd have thought they'd be ok it was techspeeded about 9months ago |

I get a slight clunk from the back when I reverse off my drive first thing. Happens when I brake and then I get a similar noise the first time I brake going forward. Then no probs for (it seems) the rest of the day. Car's new and done 1800 miles. ???????????? |

oh, mines a 98R 32k miles |

I have had this noise on two occasions. Both times it was immediately after having the suspension re-aligned. The first time, I took the car back to be checked and although I was told nothing had been found - the noise had disappeared. The second time I did nothing and after a couple of weeks it stopped happening. I have no idea what it was. Andy |

Simon, Your noise is nothing to be worried about, it is the brake pads, they have a little play and when reversing and brakeing they are forced in the opposite direction to normal(lets call this back), So 1) brakes are stuck to discs(normal) you reverse, pushing the pads "forwards" and breaking the seal 'clunk' 2) You brake to stop reversing, pushing the brakes "back" 'clunk' 3) you take off forwrds, brakes not in contact with anything 4) you brake pusing the brakes "forward", 'clunk' 5) you take off forwrds, brakes not in contact with anything 6) you brake, pads already "forwards", no movement repeat 5 & 6 Willl |

Cheers, Will. I had sort of assumed that this was probably the case. I've had similar noises on previous cars. |
