MG MGF Technical - collapsed hub is this normal?

Hi

My n/s rear wheel bearing was being replaced and the Garage phoned to tell me that the hub collapsed as they where removing it. Is this normal? Should I pay for this or is it a know fault / problem

currently £170 for bearing and another £65 for the hub.
Rhys

Not something I have heard of, but if they do replace it make sure they give you the old one back.
I thought wheel hubs were machined from castings, which should make it a pretty strong piece. Is it not also the same as the Rover 800 which was designed to deal with greater loads I would imagine

how old is car? does sound a bit sus, this is not same garage in Cardiff where graig got his mgf from yesterday,on bbs mgf gen thread, by any chance,??
DC Morris

DC Morris,

Yes it is the same garage!

Rhys, i think i would be taking a trip down to see whats going on, i know sometimes the hub is banged with hammer to loosen, but i would ask to see your hub in case they have done something to hub themselves, and trying to get you to pay for there cock up so to speak, as i suggested to craig i use mgr newtown motors in cwmbran, bit of a drive for you 20 miles approx ,it's 10 miles from me, but at least you know proffesionals are working on your pride and joy, keep us posted, Dave.
DC Morris

I'm with DC.
That part is so strong.

Yes Dieter is right;-) this a tough casting but a word of warning don't use bricks to support the car if anyone intends to do this themselves, eh Dieter?
LOL.
Mike.

If it is a casting it is possible for it to have small air holes in the casting which would weaken it. Definately take a look at the old one.

And following on from Mike's comments, don't use the wifes best bath mat for your oily jobs either. :-)
Mike

And don't use the roasting tin to drain oil into :-(
JFK

Is that why she left me?
john

Surely the bearing is going to collapse first. Sounds to me like they are trying to fleece you out of the lot as new hub would mean a new bearing too!
R Baker

ROFLMAO ! John, you see the BBS finds always reasons.
Best *checking pix* skills over here ;)
I'll enhance the site asap with some security advise :)

Richards idea on the new hub including bearing sounds reasonable. At last they can't have pre-damaged the 'new' bearing due to wrong press in process.

Will last for a long time then ;)

I recently bought a 2nd hand MGF 1998. the local autoclub (RACQ) did the inspection and found the hub had collapsed due to bearing failure. It had flogged out the hub. going back through the service documents i found that a service agent had tightened the same bearing 3,000klms previously. I don't think you can tighten bearings anymore? The point is the hub was a mess. the disc rotor and caliper were also damaged.
