MG MGF Technical - complete engine replacement
Is there any other engine gearbox combination that would fit an mgf chassis around the same power ratio as the K Series ? Thanks Bob. |

if you pop over to the Lotus side (who use the same engine and box as the F) they have both the turbocharged Audi mated with the PG1 (much more power, weight gain) as well as the engine(& box?) from the Civic-TypeR. Of course both of these options cost big, and have significant power gains over standard... why do you want to switch? |

Thanks Will, just getting ready for the possible I guess,In NZ we dont have the access to engine parts as does the UK.Mines a 99 vvc with 25k on the clock so you never know. The little things that let go are more annoying due to new, or, for that matter,2nd hand parts not being available.A head replacement would be a major, also the insurance companies dealing in vehicle maintenance are now wiseing up to historical problems and I think they may write an exclusion clause in the future. Anyway its just something thats been on my mind, Beware the fertile imagination CHEERS Bob |

I think you have a few years happy motoring yet 25K , It's only just run in ! I put a new engine in mine last October and although the VVC mech was a bit rattly it was still going strong after 120K I've put 30K on the new engine since it was fitted. I wish mine was down there on South Island, I can't think of anywhere better to enjoy an F. Stu |

25k??? yup, i'd be worried, you've only got another 200k or so on that engine till it will need a rebuild. Even then, parts may be difficult, perhaps import only, but nowhere near as difficult or expensive as fitting a diffrent engine. BTW a new crank in the UK will set you back around £100 and weigh a few KG, + shells and shipping. Heads will cost more to buy and less to ship, and can be brought from the usual suspects and shipped (don't bother with 'official channels'). The K is a newish engine still, and has been fitted to many cherished cars, it will not dissappear overnight, becasue there are thousands of people who will want to keep exactly those cars on the road. Consider that against the engine in most moderns and you start at a disadvantage because there are more on the road today, but in 5 years time they will have depreciated to nothing and people won't want spare parts like a new head prefering to buy another 'junker'. A new engine + modifications will see you looking at a minimum of £10k |

Has anyone thought of trying one of the BTCC 2ltr jobs - 275bhp @ 8500rpm?!?! Would be interesting..... |

An engine from one of the MG wreckers was purchased for $3750 complete. This was from a 99 VVC with 28000k ex Japan. The wreckers buy vehicles and cut them in half to bring them to Australia as we cant bring in vehicles and register them under 15 years old unless they were built and have a compliance plate for the Australian market. So parts are available at a fair price. |

I just wonder if there will be a more reasuring situation when the nan ching thing gets underway. But will there be renewed supply of panel and engine parts? I take Wills and Andrews point, actually its 40kk meaning 25000 miles UK .The second hand parts avail here probably would be a bit dodgy any thing that is off the road is probably for a common reason. No I just thought maybe there could be a back up. |

I don't know if najing or SAIC have plans of the engine, or if they plan on working together. So if Nanjing do go ahead they may do so using a diffrent engine extending your options. For now I would try to relax about it, if really paranoid I would import a head gasket set for your spares as it is a common failure point and it contains most of the other gaskets. the waterpump gasket is an o-ring which could probebly be sourced locally. |
