MG MGF Technical - Computer replacement
My local friendly Rover specialist (not an aurthorised dealer, I gave up with them when I got my first bill) has sent my ECU off for a quote to be 'repaired'. The computer had been modified by the previous owner (not sure how or why) but essentially made it impossible for any diagnostics (even for non MG-Rover dealers :-) ). I have a feeling the quote for repair may be large - perhaps comparable to a new computer. Can anyone offer up general advice on repair costs, second hand units, 'refurbished units' and new computers. Thanks, M |

Mark, I had to have a new ECU for my VVC, costs were (from memory)£600 for a new one and £200 for a Rover reconditioned one. I was told that the mpi ECU is quite a bit cheaper. Jason H |

I'm sure someone will offer midland mgf as a source of second hand bits. HTH Mike. |

Or buy a aftermarket one, an emerald one will set you back £400 new, and leave you with something you can use at home (think of the money you'd save on dealer diagnostics) Will P.S. Is it a VVC? |

From memory my new ECU cost approx £160 I think but was for a 1.8i and beleive my dealer got it from B&G as MGR did not have any. Luckily I did have warranty and this actually was the only part covered by it which was sods law as it was in fact the cheapest and easiest part to fit. My original one was sent of to be repaired but was unrepairable. Tom |
