MG MGF Technical - Coolant bottle mystery

Hello all,

Wonder if you could help me out with this one please. I have a Sept 03 TF160 and check the coolant and oil levels regularly. One morning last week I quickly checked both levels.

To my surprise, on the seam on the outside of the bottle there was the very smallest amount of coolant on more or less all of the sides of the bottle. Firstly, checked the cap was on tight enough and was. Concerned, I dropped the car off at the dealer who pressure tested the bottle and said that the bottle and cap were both fine, no leakages. They couldn't draw a reason at why there was some outside.

Kind of satisfied at what they told me there was no leaks I thought no more of it. On Sunday I hadn't used the car for a few days and then again in the morning before setting off, again I noticed the smallest evidence on the seam outside the bottle.

The car is running fine as normal (touch wood) and coolant temp on dash is at normal and the coolant level in the bottle is the same as it is when I check it, showing no signs of losing any. Obviously must be with the evidence outside. The fans are working too and the pipe running into the tank is fine too.

Anyone know what the problem could be ?? Faulty tank perhaps ?? The car is still under warranty too.

Any comments appreciated !!

Cheers,

Tony

Might be a dodgy cap. Worth changing, only £5 from the parts dept.

Richard,

I had the boot open whilst the car running and nothing seemed to be coming from the cap or bottle. Would this be noticeable ?? Would the cap not show up on the pressure test ??

Cheers,

Tony,
you are proberbly right that it should show up under pressure test, but I had one go on the wife's rover 400, and it looks like the one on my F has just started to leak, so for a fiver I'd change it anyway.

Richard,

Cheers for the info. Will do that and see how it goes.

The esy way to confirm if it the cap leaking is to make a tissue paper scarf to go round the cap.

You'll soon spot any coolant on the paper.
