MG MGF Technical - Coolant Leak

Opened the garage today, statred the F, reversed out and found a puddle of coolant. I ahve not used the car for about 10 days.

There is no tell tale mayo on the oil filler, but the expansion tank was almost empty.

I have topped this up and run the car to normal tempretute. The leak is towartds the middle of the car around the drivers rear wheel. The leak stops when the engine is cold.

I cannot get under the car here so she will have to gop off to the garage - she's due an MOT and Oil chnage anyway.

Any thouights on the cause? Is it safe to drive to the garage - about 6 miles up the dual carrageway

Thanks

Chris

Water pump seal maybe? Or just a leak where flexible hoses meet the coolant pipes. Or a rusty coolant pipe? This could mean that there are air ppockets now in the cooling system. Six miles as long as there are no traffic jams (i.e. do the six miles in 6-10 minutes) and you should be OK. Good luck.

Thanks for your thoughts, I'll give it a go!

Out of curiosity which garage in Essex will you be using?
Robert

I'll be using Fearnly Motors, just off the A12 in Colchester, used themk for years. Not the cheapest but honest.

Took the car in today. Leak appears to be coming from the water pump (£~300 FITTED) but cannot tell for sure until stripped down a bit. Last time they did one they found it was the cylinder head (~£600)that was leaking not the pump! We shall have to see, I have booked the car in in a couple of weeks.

Chris,

Provided you make sure that the car is topped up with coolant, and you drive carefully 6 miles should be ok if it just a coolant leak to the outside world. I would how ever take a container of water and check the coolant level after a couple of miles and top up if necessary.

The water pump seal on my on car failed a couple of months ago on a drive back to london from Goodwood. you will notice coolant dripping off the engine just under the crank pulley behind the rear off-side wheel. I took the option of replacing the pump myself (you can just replace the seal but you might as well replace the whole pump whilst you're at it, the pump cost £35ish). I have to confess that changing the waterpump is a a bit of a faff, particularly getting the cam belt back on but now that you mention how much a garage charges I'm glad I gave it a go, it just took me a bit more time....

Good luck.

I'm hoping it is the pump. Don't know when the belt was changed so they will do that at the same time!

Oh well!

Hi....
I also have a coolant lost, but never figure out where the leak comes from. Sent to MG dealer..BKK, they did the pressure test and still found no clue.

I am now having to add coolant at the end of the week, for nearly 3 weeks now.

Help.....Help.

Thanks
