MG MGF Technical - coolant pipe clips

Hi all, Regards to the steel coolant pipes ,just thought I would share the problem I have had since replacing the original steel to rubber hose clips, "useless things" with the wide 15mm band s/s clips that are generally recommended.I have found that whilst these clips are kind to the rubber being able to hold form over a larger section of pipe mine have been weeping on the passenger side. This is because the clip spreads over too much of pipe area,and if there is any small deformity in the steel pipe the rubber doesnt get a chance to squeeze into that deformity. Better, I think, is the standard BMW 40mm hose clip that has a rolled edge to protect the rubber,that gives only a 7mm spread forcing the rubber into the variances the pipe may have. Nit picking I know but maybe a loose hose can drag air into the system as the car cools, Hope all is well with the forum, and you are all enjoying the summer..Cheers Bob.

I thought putting different clips on old hoses was considered a bad thing anyway because the rubber becomes less pliable with age and cannot take up the profile of the new clip.

Digressing slightly, the rubber hoses joining the coolant pipes to the radiator are each made in two pieces that are clamped one inside the other. The whole of each joint is slightly squashable so they appear to contain no rigid adaptor, but they don't leak under pressure. Is this normal? (lack of adaptor, not no leaks)

Rob. Chris has raised the point, did you fit new rubber pipes ?? If not, why not ?? Like the cambelt, the rubber in pipes deteriorates the same with age.
I have a policy to replace any pipe disturbed after 5 years and replace all at ten.

Hi Geoff, Down here we dont have access to supply let alone now a garage with any familiarity of MGF. Possibly in Auckland but insofar as run of the mill stuff we have to make do.Cambelts are an exception though,otherwise its improvise.But, I do wonder if hoses do need to be replaced in such a short time frame, most other cars weve had the hoses have out lasted the car.

There are two points.
Most other cars do not blow a gasket when they lose a little coolant and on most other cars the hoses are not disturbed in the lifetime of the car.
Good Practice has always been to replace an old hose when disturbed however this becomes essential on the 'F'. This is evident from the many horror stories on this and other forums. Many HGFs are secondary to a coolant leak.

Thanks Geoff, So I assume now, that each time I replace the coolant "every 15 mths " the hose is also replaced? My understanding is one has to disconnect the passenger side hose to drain the coolant. Reminds me of that old rhyme , "there was an old lady who swallowed a fly" Im about to change the spark plugs ,Only hope I dont have to remove the sump ,crank etc and go in from there. Hope all is driving around in warm sunny airs not like here, freezing. Have a good 1
