MG MGF Technical - Coolant resevoir level
Had the f a few months now read thru the faq's on this site so decided to give it a check over. The car was "serviced" prior to me collecting it so i thought everything should be ok!First and most worrying thing i see is the coolant level approx 1/2 way between seam and top of bottle, have since used a syringe to remove excess coolant (appears clean and fresh). So question 1 will this have caused me any problems,at moment needle sits steady at1 seg below 1/2 on temp gauge.Check oil next and guess what, yep overfilled again question 2 same as question 1! So has the car been serviced or has someone just topped up the levels the latter i think so i shall diy this weekend all advice & tips gratefully recieved. Cheers Kev |

Not to worry too much about a high level Kev - just keep an eye on the level for a couple of days now: you may find that the true level is a little lower than you first thought. |

Hi Kev, Coolant level shoudn't be a problem, as long as there was sufficient space for expansion in the tank. (that's what it's there for). I would check the level again, after running the car for a while with the heater full on, just to make sure it's still at half way. If oil level was VERY high, this can cause problems, but if only little above max, then I wouldn't worry. Sounds like the wazzok who serviced the vehicle just liked adding a little extra for good measure! Sam |

PS I'm still going to service it my self so can i ask the size of the box spanner required for the plugs (read it in a thread but cant find it now doh!)& where is best place to obtain service items? Thanks in advance kev. |

Spark plugs are pretty much standard between cars (motorcycles are different, IIRC - John will know). Kev, just ensure that you get a box spanner with sufficient depth. Also be aware of the tightening torque. Too tight, and you'll risk damaging the thread in the head (relatively easy, due to alloy construction). Too loose and the spark plug will work its way out. In either case, the spark plug can end up being jetisoned at high velocity from the head, and you'll end up having the helicoil the damaged thread :o( You've been warned! |
