MG MGF Technical - Coolant temp after head job

Hi all.

As some will recall I completeley disassembled my F's head some time ago. It's a ´99 VVC.

On the process I followed Dave Andrews' advice and opened the head's waterways. I don't know if this is purely related or not, but the fact is that now it takes far longer for the engine to warm up.

On every morning I pull away imediately after ignition and drive it below 3500 rpm for several minutes. It's a classic rural road before I hit the motorway.

Before it used to take 3 miles (5km) till the temperature rose to the normal position (1 notch before the middle). Now it takes 7 miles (11km) to reach the same temperature. Of course these figures vary in accordance with the ambiente temperature. Anyhow these are average values.

What do you think about this fact?

Strange - I would not have thought that it would have made any difference?
Rob Bell

Sounds like a dodgy thermostat stuck open.
Will Munns

I don't think it has something to do with your work on the head. Maybe the thermostat is closing completely?
Spyros Papageorghiou

Yes, perhaps this isn't related with the head job. But the fact is that it happened simultaneously...

And I removed a lot of alluminium on those water ways. Some have now twice as much the passage area.

Car has done 5000km since the job and is perfect in every respect (hits 6950rpm in top gear! I was really missing that feeling. Only do this a couple of times a year, though :o) ). Only this has changed. In my opinion is not that bad, because now it may have reduce the thermal shocks on the head.

Could some derbis from the headwork worked its way to the thermostat preventing it from closing completely? It only takes a very small piece.
Spyros Papageorghiou

Hypothetically it can possible, but I took EXTRA care on everything...
