MG MGF Technical - Crankshaft locking tool

Hi everyone,
Can anybody send me a sketch, photograph, drawing or detail of the MGF VVC Crankshaft Locking Tool, Part No. 18G1742. I cannot buy one locally on short notice so I am fabricating one myself from a drawing in the workshop manual but it only shows one view (back). Thank you

Try going to your dealer with a set of vernier calipers as I did for another tool. They didn't seem to mind too much.

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your input. I did try the one local dealer in town. He was reluctant to help unfortunately.

Are you taking the engine out of the car?

I made a crank locking tool by cutting a piece of angle iron and welding into a T shape, two holes for the screws and the tail of the T to fit into the ring gear. This should work fine, but I am not sure if it would clear the reluctor ring(SP?) for the VVC, I think it would just be a case of fettleing it with a file to make it fit. I can send you pictures and a scan (for the dimentions) if you like.

Why do you need to lock the crank?
Will Munns

Hi Will,
I am replacing the crankshaft pulley, cam belt and adjuster, water pump etc. with the engine in the car. I would appreciate photos etc. of the tool you made if possible. It sounds very similar to the one I am in the process of making but it would be good to check before I start the job so I know I am on the right track.
Thanks

210Nm!!

which by themselves dont require crank locking

>with the engine in the car.
this is the kicker, the crank locking tools(mine and MGR's) require the holes that the gearbox is located with - so to use either you have to take the engine out.

A much cheaper crank locking tool is 5th gear and a very heavy (remember no servo!) brake pusher. Keep the cam belt on to ensure if the engine does slip that all the bits move out of the way!
Will Munns

Hi Will and thanks for the information. I will give your suggestion a try.
