MG MGF Technical - Crash damage & MOT

Some idiot who wasn't leaving enough of a breaking distance between me and himself managed to plough into the back of me a few weeks ago. The damage is on the rear offside:

the exhaust pipe on that side is folded in on itself, but with gas still coming out of it - I have inspected the exhaust and there does not seem to be any cracks/splits in the pipe work;

the bottom corner of number plate has been smashed, but the actual letters are undamaged;

the towing eye has been bent down and partially ripped away from the main chassis.

My tax needs renewing at the end of the month, so the car needs MOTing again. Will any of this cause the car to fail its MOT?

The number plate might get you, everything else sounds cosmetic as long as there are no holes between bumper and body which a child could stick their fingers into
Will Munns

No holes between bumper and bodywork, so that sounds OK.

Does anybody know if there is a minimum height required for a number plate? I'm thinking that I could trim the bottom 15mm off the number plate to "remove" the broken bit (I would just be removing the garage name, not any off the registration letters). Otherwise, I'll just get a new number plate and charge this back to the other guys insurers.

Thanks,

My F was hit at the back around the time that it needed its first MOT and I needed to get the MOT before the repair was done. The MOT centre was going to fail the car on the number plate (half of one of the letters was missing). I explained that the car was going to be repaired the following week and they then passed the car.

James,
Contact the garage where the MOT is to be done, if they are half decent they will have a look and let you know. They have nothing to gain by failing it for that.
That is what I would do, if in doubt go somewhere else.

Why not just get a new plate - take your V5 and proof of identiity (photo card licenense is fine) to Halfords (or such) and get a plate made up the stick it onto the old one!

Why are you not getting the other driver's insurance company to fix the car and proving you with a spare while yours is being fixed?

Having an MoT failure that cannot be driven should increase the pressure on them.
