MG MGF Technical - crunching reverse

help! almost every time i try to reverse i cant get in gear! it feels like its in but isnt. has anyone else had this prob?
thanks
san

Going to reverse from another gear will help in the short term.Someone out there will tell you the reason ,I have same problem on my 96 vvc
paul

san, this is a normal problem. All F gearboxes do this. Others have sugested that putting it into 1st or 2nd for a few seconds, then into reverse helps. Have a look in the archives, there will be a lot of information there.

Agree with everything already said, BUT,
Do change the gearbox oil and feel the difference in the way the car drives, Much smoother and much less graunching of gears.

thanks everyone, i will try your sugestions. on the last one about changing the gearbox oil, the car is only 2 weeks old, should i still change the oil?
san

Yes,
It may not be FULL

thanks, they didnt even tighten the battery terminals or align the hood so they probably didnt fill the gearbox oil either!
san

My new brand TF did it frecuently. You have to asume the gear is not shifted and pull hardly, although you were sure it's fited.

With the use, the crunchy noise has stopped, don't know if is because I learnt to shift properly the gear or is cause the gearbox has been reached it's ok position...

May i suggest looking at the gear change lever where it joins with the gear box. This has a nut adjustment on the cable, limiting how far the cable can be pulled through. If you move the adjusting nut you will find that the cable is pulled about 1/2 an inch further, helping better gear contact.
