MG MGF Technical - Cylinder liner protrusion
MG Rover's service manual does not specify how much the K-engine's cylinder liners should protrude above the cylinder block. Anybody who knows? |
Jon F |
was said to be 0.15mm to not less than 0.1mm |
Dieter |
Sorry to contradict Dieter, but I think this is for a new engine. I'm sure that the Landrover service bulitin for the MLS gasket quotes a bit less than this reconising that the liners settle in service. I don't have the bulitin to hand, as I gave it to the mechanic who did my daughters last HGF. Can somebody check? |

Paul, that's correct. Looked up and found it ****** cut ********** Cylinder liner position Cylinder liner position is the distance that the liner protrudes above or is below the face of the cylinder block. Liners can be level with or 0.075mm (0.003in) above the face of the block. If the liners have dropped below the block face, the engine must be replaced. ********************* Regards Dieter |

Next question is how much difference in protrusion among the cylinders that is allowed. If one liner is level with the block and the remaining three are .075 above, is it still recommended to put the engine back together? |
Jon F |
I don't think its helpful to have a big difference between adjacent liners |
Paul Hollingworth |
Lets be quite clear, despite what the manual says, if your liners are lower than 4 thou (0.1mm) you will have HGF. Dave |
Dave Andrews |
It it recommendable to put shims under liners that have sunk to obtain correct protrusion? |
Jon F |
Making such shims is entremely difficult, it is better to lower the surface of the block by linishing. Dave |
