MG MGF Technical - Damaged Alloy
I noticed last night that I've got a very small gouge out of one of my alloys. It's not been kerbed as it's too far inside the wheel so I assume it was a stone chip etc. What can I do to repair it? It is very small, about 4mm long and 2mm wide with the gouged material sticking out. Is there an alloy wheel repair kit you can buy or should I simply remove the damaged paint/ laquer and touch it up slighlty with some metallic silver paint? Any advice is appreciated as always. |

Bob, I damaged one of my alloys after tripping over something in my garage. Took it to ChipsAway at Anniesland Business Park in Glasgow and it's now as good as new. Cost £70 for this and the removal of a small "ding" on the bonnet. |

Bob, there are various alloy wheel repairs around, they "reprofile" the wheel (fancy name for grinding it smooth and then repaint it , balance it etc. for around £60-70 per wheel, depending on the amount of work needed. (look in Yellow pages)for someone in your area. Mike |

"for around £60-70 per wheel, depending on the amount of work needed" Sounds a bit expensive, I had five alloy wheels repaired and recoated for my wifes Honda for £125 and I had my 4 Trophy alloys recoated for £100 at ROMAX UK in Stockton on Tees. |

Another option is to go to Halfords, they do an Alloy Wheel repair Kit but this would then require painting. This is not a permanent solution as paint is not as strong as powder coating which is more resistant to stone chips. |

>>£60-70 per wheel, depending on the amount of work needed Deffinatly too much! I got a used (unmarked) TF160 alloy for £75 at Silverstone. Try your dealer, most have a local contact who repairs wheels for them. |

At the risk of sounding like a broken record - get in touch with Victoria at the MGF Centre. She'll be able to supply you with a nearly new alloy (inperfect nick) for probably less than it would cost to get yours refurbished. As an example, I replaced a 15" standard 1.8 alloy for £40. Hope this helps, Jim |
