MG MGF Technical - Damp Boot
Sorry if this has been covered before.I noticed today a damp area in the center of my boot today and a not too nice smell. The car is parked on an incline overnight with the nose pointing upwards.Am I right in thinking the rear light cluster gaskets are to blame? Thanks

Dk Yes, this was a fairly common feature of Fs in the early years. Later ones have a thicker gasket. Chris

Ditto. Nice thick bead of silicon, sorted!,(even got red to match the car).
Mark
Mark, where did you apply the silicone, if you excuse the bleedin' obvious question? And where do you get red from?
Paul
Paul. Like Chris says, problem seems to be light gaskit is to thin( well was on mine!.). Removed rear lights, 3 bolts inside boot, and run thick bead of silicon over existing gaskit, then just stuck it back!. No more watercress and mushrooms growing in the boot well, now :o) . Red silicon i used was a flue sealer for gas fires, boilers etc, try Plumb Center, or any Plumbers merchants, should have it!. Solar Red silicon, the uses could be endless!.

Or simply replace the rear lamp gaskets with the later, thicker variety :o)

DK Don't forget to 'silicone in' the blind rubber grommets on the inside of the bootlid. (One of mine was loose, allowing water to drain past it into the boot area). Mike.

Thanks for the input.

replace the gaskets,quick and cleaner!!
p withington
replace gaskets and apply silicon. Never leak again.

two and a half blummen years....new gaskets, two tubes of silicon sealant, several newspapers..talcum powder..fitted little rubber grommets, sealed all the seams.......and mine STILL lets in water ! But if you fill the centre dip with gravel..some plants and a little wrecked pirate ship....it's not quite so annoying.
