MG MGF Technical - Dash
Another question I'm afraid. While fitting MS heater switch panel I have managed to break the plastic that holds gear gatter. I need to remove dash to try a super glue job but even with advise from people last week I can't seem to remove radio, which I assume is all that is stopping me from removing entire dash. The ally switch plate which has the 3 holes for knobs seems to have the holes in the wrong place as the bottom part shrouds symbols and can't go lower because of the two bits of plastic which the pen lid close against. Should I have to cut corners of plate or speak with MS about replacement? Also on removing the MS ally heater knobs. When re fitting and I tighten the allen screw the knobs go at a sever angle, there is as much as 5-10mm gap on one side and touching on the other. I have made several attempts but as soon as I tighten the screw to stop them falling off it all goes wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Hello Mr. T, First I guess when you say "dash" you mean "centre console"? Havinga pen lid, I assume you have a MKI console: 1. grab rear of of console, behind the gator and pull back and upwards. 2. to remove the radio, you need to slide in, at both sides of the radio, flat metal strips, generally supplied upon radio purchase. They unblock clips holding the radio.remove radio harness 3. Now remove two clips holding the fascia. They´re positioned below the radio fitting, they should be visible now you´ve removed the radio. 4. remove upper vent (easily accessed when removing footwell panels, and then pushing it out in order not to ruin the dashboard) 5. once you´ve removed the vent, pull/push out the top part of the fascia (console) from the top clip, which is positioned above the clock/oil tem guauge 6. disconnect the plugs from clock/oil temp 7. The heater dial panel sits on its own, not attached to the console/fascia 8. pull the fascia in front of the gear lever. There are 2 more clips at right and left hand side 9. now you should be able to disconnect the looms from the heater switches 10. You now should have the console/fascia in your hands. 11. NOW stick Mike´s Ally stick on fascia onto the heater dial block. the plastic bits where the pen lid rests on, the ally bit will sit behind these bits. Good luck, David. >>I can't seem to remove radio, which I assume is all that is stopping me from removing entire dash.<< Basically, that's right - the radio HAS to be removed before attempting to remove the whole centre console. Removal depends on the type of radio/head unit fitted. If it is the early Phillips type, then the bent-wire radio removal tool needs to be used, as we discussed last time. If an after market head unit is fitted, then removal procedure varies considerably. You'll need to consult your operation manual for that system. What have you got fitted? |

Some manufacturers occasionally put allen head screws in the slots for removing the radio so if you have poroblems putting the removal tools in try some allen keys to see if there is a screw stoppong the tool going in. Tom |

I have the original Philips radio, so will ask at Halfords if they have the toll on my way home tonight. Should I disconect the batery before doing this job, if so I have no idea what the security code is, where might I find out? |

The radio code should be on a I think from memory something similar to a credit card which will have information like vin number, radio security code, alarm code for opening with the key. It depends where you bought the car from whether or not you have it. You don't need to unplug the battery but depends what sort of work you will be doing round the wiring, if you not sure for safety disconnect the battery. Tom |

T, Even if you don't disconeect the battery (which is probably a good idea) you'll lose the radio's memory when you disconnect it. If you're lucky, the code may have been written on the label on the chassis of the radio, or noted in the car's handbook. While you've got the head unit out, why not treat yourself to a new one for Christmas! Sam |

No need to remove the battery. The security code *should* be with all the other security codes with the owners hand book and service document folder. If you've not got this, then you could get the code from your dealership. |

If you disconnect the battery or the radio then you will need the security code to reactivate the radio when you replace it. And to remove the dash (away from the car for repair) I think you will find you will have to disconnect the radio. When I had my wallet stolen - along with the MG security card - my dealer was able to give me a new card with the radio and the car alarm security numbers from the VIN details, naturally I had to prove that I was the registered keeper of the car.
