MG MGF Technical - Daytona Positioning

Just got a garage to fit Mike Satur's Daytona quad exhaust, and i must mention my grin factor has increased to dizzy heights. Also a small mention to Mike's spot...excellant service!

Yet im left with a problem in that i understand how to raise/lower the pipes with the adjustment screws/brackets but the exhaust is able to move 0.5 - 1.0 inch left to right in the rubber hook mountings and i cant see any fixing that would stop this, has the garage f'd my F ?

This movement can cause the pipes to sit against my bumper :( and also gives an uneven appearance from the rear.

Any help would greatly be appreciated !

Thanks for the reply, It is easy to slide the exhaust into the correct position. As soon as I let it go it slides itself back off line. I will try to seek people like yourself out at Silverstone and maybe this problem will be rectified.

does scarlet/nik have my answer ?:)

Hello Colin,
This problem still bugs me everytime I look at the car. At Silverstone last year I spoke to Mike Satur about this, helped by the fact that his own car was on display right infront of us. His exhaust was badly off-centre also. " I've never noticed that before" was the comment. I will seek him out at Silverstone this Sunday to see if a remedy has been developed.

Colin, who fitted the exhaust for you ?

Well on stumbling across this http://www.mgfcar.de/exhaust_milltek/

i see it's not so unique, i fancy a crack at the "fat" washer/bush idea making it impossible for the pull to the left. But i need a quick answer as ive got the pipes waiting to burn rubber and there gonna burn plastic :)

So does your pipe burn your rear valence?
Colin Shaw

Colin,
I thought about a fat rubber washer but decided that as it would keep a constant pressure on the mounting bracket something might have to give. Looking at the result on the website that you attached, I was probably right to leave alone. If your pipe is actually touching the valance then I think it would melt. Ours is about 12mm away on the RHS and other than looking crap it works fine. Will let you know on Monday if MS has a solution.

Hi Colin

I used a small jubilee clip on the hanger, just position the exhaust where you what it, and tighten up the clip.
I have used this for 2 years with no problems.

Cheers Alastair,

could you elaborate ? Jubilee clip where exactly on the hanger, and on which side, or is this all irelavent and you just place it where it takes the give.

Anyhow intrested where yours is placed with its 2 yr track record ~:)

... very interesting I always thought my Janspeed exhaust had been manufactured with a fault ... after having it fitted it was slightly off centre veering towards the drivers side (RHD) ...

Well after a hr f-in around i've managed to centre the exhaust perfect every way and even thrown in a couple of 60mph corner test's in aswell.

Guess the mechanic wasnt to bothered with all this perfection when he was only going to get £20 fitting.

Guess i should of spent less time winging here and just got stuck in :)

Cheers for all posts!

Nice one Colin. There's a huge amount of adjustment available on the hangers, and of course the tail pipe finishers can be moved relative to the back box as well. Just takes a little bit of time to get perfection :o)

LOL.. Isn't it funny and a crazy coincedence that (nearly?) all the *different manufacturers* have the same trouble with the bracket distances ?

Janspeed, Moto-build, Milltek.... ;)

Anyway, I think the main reason is that they used the Elise measures and kind of location of the brackets to convert this to the MGF design years ago.
If the brackets of an Elise Exhaust are only turned by 180° around to the inner direction, then about 1 inch is missing.

Mad theory, ... who knows ?
:o)

Just spotted this thread,

Yes, *ALL* the aftermarket exhausts (TTBOMK) suffer from this, i believe because the design of the brackets has been copied from the standard MGR item.

Basically, the top part of the hooks is slightly too long, allowing the entire exhaust box to move left or right in the rubber mountings.

The fat washer idea has some merit, but IMO you would need a pair, one for each hanger and they should be slightly too small, say 5mm wide apiece so that there is no undue pressure put on the rubber mountings. A pair of rings, 5mm wide and 10mm diameter should do the trick, i beleieve the hanger is only 6mm diameter but it has a hook on the end to locate it in the rubber mounting and this will need to be negotiated by the washer.

An alternative is to fit a rear grille the the bumper, this is the route i followed and it helps to keep the tailpipes in place.

well thanks for a great response...

Although ive now sorted me pipes (washer-a-go-go), i've now developed a serious mental problem were by i have to check my friggin exhaust every time i stop n start...ha way too much love for mike sat's babys !

Just don't get too loving, it will only end in tears!!!!!!

Must agree lovely sound, lovely performance, lovely looks. I just wish MGR made it easier to take the old one off. It took my mechanic an hour to get the old nuts off with an Oxy/Accetylene torch. Although it was amusing to watch 8 mechanics stop what they were doing to help adjust the finishers to get them looking just right. That's too much love!!!
