MG MGF Technical - De-icer

Bit chilly this morning when i went out to the car at 6:30 indicating winters well on its way.

Wondered if it would be ok to use de-icer on the rear screen when it freezes up in the winter or whether it would damage the screen as this will be my first winter with the car
Bob Millar

(bad news) I really wouldn't, the deicer is made of certain volatiles which may dammage the plastic

(good news) The plastic will not be dammaged if you pour hot water onto it. Hot water is much cheaper!. In fact during the coldest months I defrosted the (whole) F with four pints of warm water direct from the hot tap, the coldest water applied first. This works a treat!

Danger Will Robinson!
Hot water on cold car can lead to cracks in both glass and cast ferrous metal bits. Use with caution I'd say.
Bob

but _not_ on the plastic screen, and it will heat it enough to open the hood for crisp top down driving.

Also I start with cold water, and work upwards
Will Munns

eh wouldnt the cold water freeze even more?
Bob Millar

the volume of water makes sure it doesn't, the problem with anti-freeze is there is too small a volumne of water.

Buy a MS Sun mate !!

Mine goes on every night whatever the weather... protects the hood and no more frozen screens...

Best accessory i ever bought...

does the sun mate stop condensation inside too? took about 10 minutes to clear the bloody wind screen this morning...........nice n sunny tho:):)

De-icer is fine on the rear screen in my experience.

Still, you haven't a wiper to wipe it off... so I just use warm water as suggested above.

>>does the sun mate stop condensation inside too?<<

No it doesn't but all i do is leave a window open about 5mm at night and then just switch the aircon on for 5mins in the mornin... it goes very very quickly..

But i thought we were talking ice not condensation?
