MG MGF Technical - Dead car - blown 40A fuse

My partner's 5 month old F died on Saturday just after starting - the engine just stopped. A small wisp of smoke was seen from the top of the dashboard. Inspection revealed a 40A fuse blown in the forward fuse box.

When the breakdown man tried another fuse it blew as soon as the ignition key was turned.

The car is now at the main dealer awaiting someone to look at it for warrantee repair. It is suspected that a cable is shorting where it passes through the body somewhere. I just wondered if this is just a one off or a known phenomena.

First I've heard of it, which 40 Amp fuse ('link' I guess)

Didn't see too closely, there aren't too many in that box, some ordinary little ones and about four bigguns. Obviously includes starter and ingition circuits......

IIRC there are about 8, and they include an 80Amp fuse for the battery for everything, but definatly NOT a fuse for the starter, all the big fuses(links) just guard the other fuses, so an electrical fault should fail a fuse further down the line

I wonder if this has anything to do with recall A169? http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/MGF_recalls.htm#r3

Wires could chaff against the body work - the dash support - near the radio console.

Like Will, this is the first time that I've heard about anything quite like this on these boards...

My guess is that it's Link 5 caused by a short in or near the ignition switch. Most of the leads going out of the ignition switch have fuses of their own which have a lower rating and would thus blow before Link 5.

Just as a matter of interest is it an *F* or a *TF* - you say 5 months old - I thought the *F* ceased production about 18 months back.

Ooher. Perhaps you're right Ted.

Anyway, I wish to change my plea to Link 4 not 5

:¬))
