MG MGF Technical - Dead Engine - W reg MGF
I recently purchased my first ever MGF, 3 years and 6 days old with 8k on the clock...and the engine "developed" a hole in the piston which caused the engine to sieze / die. Obviously very annoyed, this potential defect was apparently spotted in the past and the spark plugs changed (under warranty) although there is no documentation of them being changed (??) Now with the car out of warranty MG Rover are not being particularly helpful and refusing to acknowedge that there could have been a problem with the engine. Any advice would be appreciated! |

I do not want to sound silly BUT I dont think what you are saying is actually what happened BUT I am no K series expert - anyone else care to comment! A hole in a piston will not be cured by changing the plugs. If any waranty work was carried out then there will be a record of it. Take it back to the dealer where you bought it and tell them to sort it - and mention that if they dont you will have a word with the Trading Standards Officer Ted |

I have to agree with Ted, Plugs and holed pistons do not seem to be related, unless a large (solid) part of plug fell into the cylinder which I've not heard of before. Mike |

Thanks Ted, I was not saying that the spark plugs caused the problem, I am saying that because the spark plugs were changed (prior to the recommended 5yrs / 60k miles) - this highlights that someone felt that they spotted a problem with the ignition sequence / possisble misfiring. The hole in the piston was caused by this problem (not spark plugs being changed, they are merely an indicator of a previous issue) - apologies for not being clearer earlier. If only I had bought it from a dealer...brought from my aunt, who changed her MGF for a TF...cheers!! |

Did your Aunt buy the TF from the same garage that supplied the F. If she did then she may be able to bring some pressure to bear as the cost of warranty is now with the dealer. Cheers Patrick |

If you want to see a nicely holed KSeries piston then visit here: http://www.kseries.com/pistongallery.html This had nothing to do with my spark plugs! I've replaced them all with forged pistons, so I've got 3 spares now if anybody needs one! ;-) Cheers, Ian. |
