MG MGF Technical - Diff seals
I have oil leaking from the differential / driveshaft seals, what has to be removed or disconnected to change them? Thanks Alastair |

Alastair, You have mail from me Bruce |

Thanks Bruce, the diagrams are a great help. Do you know if the service tool for fitting the new seal is really necessary, I have used sockets or the old seal for similar jobs in the past? Cheers Alastair |

I think you'll find that there are two types of drive shaft seal, and early and a late model version. Be careful the one you choose they are NOT interchangable!!!! |

I also understand that this is a DIY job and should take no longer than 30 minutes per wheel BUT as Tim says make sure you have the correct seals first - the early *F*s were prone to leaks in this area and that is one of the reasons for the change of design to the drive shafts on later cars. Ted |

<<Do you know if the service tool for fitting the new seal is really necessary>> Sorry Alastair, never done the job myself (thank the Lord) so don't know. Anyone? Bruce |

You can tell if you have an old or new seal by looking at the CV joint, ones with the new seal have a grove machined into the CV a round it's circumferance at the gear box side, going on the diagram that Bruce has sent me. Alastair |
