MG MGF Technical - Differences In Japanese Import Exhaust

I have a Japanese imported F, 96 VVC. Can anyone tell me the differences in the exhaust system compared with the British model? I seem to recall that there is a warning light on the Jap version which tells you when the heat shield has a problem. Is this the only difference?
Will a British style downpipe, cat and silencer fit mine or will one or more of these items be different?

Mines a jap import

All the std exhausts fit but when you come to replace the cat there is a cat overheat light on your dash that will wont be used anymore as the UK cars dont have this sensor..

You need to either remove the sensor and leave it taped up somewhere or if you remove it, link out the cables or the light on your dash will remain on.. Failsafes to on !

Other than that alls the same, I have a motorbuild exhaust..

Thanks Stu,

How much of your system have you replaced and at what price? (Hope you don't mind me asking).

Replaced the exhaust last year, be honest can't remember how much exactly.. i think it was about 280, i love the sound of it..

The cat i replaced a few months ago initialy with a by-pass which stayed on the car for 1 day.. Much to loud!! If i accelerated just a little passing some parked cars most of the alarms went off!!

So i bought a cheap replacement cat from british car parts which was physically much smaller but found on the last RR day it was robbing me of about 8hp! 162 down to 154..

So i removed it and put a highflow moss one on and it all seems back to norm..

Blimey! i just realised i've written a book... sorry

Thanks Stu,

Just been researching a complete exhaust system for my car as it must be due to be replaced soon (7yrs). I'm fed up with the squealing noise as well. See another thread. Best I can get at the moment is £104 for the downpipe, £174 for the cat and £122 for the silencer.

Bruce,

You could also try MGF Centre of course.... You might get the whole lot for a little more than the price of a down pipe. 01902 403045 (on hols until mid next week) Something off a one year old car perhaps if you don't mid going secondhand!!!

I would imagine that if you intend to replace the whole lot it doesn't matter whether you have the MK1 or MK 2 system. Am I correct?!

Tim,

Not sure of the differences between MK1 and 2 but wasn't there a different route to the system? It would be OK if the mounting points are still OK. Perhaps someone could tell us?

I think (think) that the only difference was the extra elbow between the Silencer and the cat. I'm sure Mike S will be along in a mo to comment.

>>I would imagine that if you intend to replace the whole lot it doesn't matter whether you have the MK1 or MK 2 system. Am I correct?!<<

If you are replacing the catalyst with a Mk2 item, then you have to fit a Mk2 exhaust.

One thing to note, however, is that the Mk2 catalyst (on any car manufactured after Jan 1st 2001, has an additional sensor AFTER the cat. You're Mk1 MGF clearly has no need for this item, so you can simply block it up.

If you keep your existing cat, and want to use a post 2001 exhaust back box, Mike Satur can sell you a simple elbow joint that'll mate the Mk1 and Mk2 components together.

Where have you priced the silencer up? is this a new standard silencer or second hand?, and does this include VAT and fitting? Where is this from?

I haven't had to buy an exhaust yet, but am planning on getting a silencer soon, and I thought they were about £200.

Cheers,
Phil.
P James

Phil,

The silencer is not an MGR one. It does not inc VAT. The advantages of having a son in the trade who will also help me to fit the system. :¬)
