MG MGF Technical - Distributor Cap Difference

The heavy rain and general dampness caused an absolute non-start of my 96 F on Friday morning. I had changed the plugs and plug leads the last time this happened, and it made a dramatic difference. This time I changed the distributor cap, and finally found how to change the coil to distributor HT lead, and hey presto, after drying the plugs and clearing the flooded cylinders she started no problems.

We've been for a spin this morning in the sunshine and I could swear that the car is different. There is a nicer engine tone, the car feels sharper, the electric windows work faster, lights seem brighter, etc etc etc. Could this be due to stemming a current leak?

I have now started to cover the engine vent at night. Is it the experience of this board that doing this will reduce the occurrences of a non-start? I'm hoping so for the next couple of months at least until my new garage is built!

Now you've replaced the HT components, I would think that you've probably solved. Can't comment on the workings of all the other electrical gubbins though...

Covering the vents? I don't - and my car is always parked outside and doesn't seem to mind the wet. But if it works for you, then why not? In some cases people have found that damp can work its way into the ECU connectors...
Rob Bell

The only trouble with covering over the back vent is forgetting to uncover it before driving off.

One guy on here sprayed WD40 over the electrics to keep moisture at bay.

Thanks again for your encouraging words. WD40 has now been added to the electrics, and I always need to go into the boot, if for no other reason than for my coolant level paranoia!

Graham, might I recommend sir one of Malcolm Gammon's finest coolant level sensors to help sooth those pangs of paranoia? :o) It is a seriously good bit of kit. :o)
Rob Bell

Rob, it is already on the wish list awaiting overdraft enhancement! Did I mention what a great bank the Royal Bank of Scotland is? ;o)

Mr. Malcolm Gammon's finest coolant level sensor damb near gave me heart failure yesterday. After at least an hour trying to get out of a car show in Scone Castle with loads of stop start driving when I got to the motorway away from Perth, boot down and the thing goes mad, buzzer buzzing and light flashing. Got to a parking spot after having the thought of an impending head-gasket when I should really be stopping, or accelerate for a dash to the parking spot. Only to find all was well. phew. It must have been a combination of the events preceding, but it nearly ended me.

Even thought that was a false alarm it did remind me how glad I was to have fitted it.
