MG MGF Technical - dodgy window fit!

help! got my new tf this week with a hard top and when i put the soft top up (after loads of strugling cos it was so tight!) theres big gaps round the side windows. on one side there big enough to fit my finger through. i went back to dealer and he said the windows can be set to hard top for winter or soft top for summer and i would have to keep going back every spring and autum to have windows adjusted when i changed roof! he did say that they MIGHT get it so that the window is sort of ok with both tops but might not. he also said that after the second time they move the windows i have to pay as its not covered by waranty. this dont sound right to me, anyone else had this problem?
san

IMHO this should NOT be the case. You should be able to get the windows to fit both the soft and hard top without summer/winter readjustment. This winter will see my car's 6th winter with hard top and the windows have never been adjusted for the winter/summer.

Take the car back and start by stating that you'd like your money back because the car is not fit for purpose. That should make their sphincter muscles tighten a bit. The windows and hardtop can be adjusted to fit the soft top setting. Or tell them to adjust the windows to the soft top setting and replace the hard top with one that fits!

Also try contacting Rover direct. Someone on here will probably know the number.

thanks, i tried tellin him to take car back but he said it couldnt be done. i thought it used to be mg/rover policy to take it back if your not happy. problem is i cant hide how much i love the car even with dodgy windows! im gonna go back again next week to collect the hardtop storage thing they forgot to deliver so il have a go at him again. whats a PDI? i think its a pre delivery inspection but would like someone to explain exactly what it involves. and should i have one? if so how do i get one?
san

PDI is a pre delivery inspection and means just that. It is done (or should be) prior to you taking delivery of the car. They check basic things like oil and water levels and the number of hardtops fitted...huh.

I would take legal advice. Failing that turn up with the largest meanest bloke you can find and start thumping the sales desk at their busiest moment. Don't take no for an answer.

Line 52 of the old PDI form reads:-

'If optional hardtop is supplied, fit hard top and repeat road test for squeaks, rattles and wind noise.'

Ask them how come it passed the windnoise test with a gap at the top of the window.

If a tin topped car had the same gap would it pass as well?

Grr..

thanks, i rang garage and spoke to someone else a bit more helpful this time! there gonna get me a copy of pdi and said they will sort windows out! its really helpful being able to get advise here, the dodgy man at the garage can sound very convincing even when im sure hes wrong!

Sandra, here's some useful info to throw at the dealer if they don't do the work they are legally bound to do. :-
If your car is faulty, you have six months from the date of purchase in which you can reject it. Under new legislation, you can demand repair or a replacement, unless it would cause 'disproportionate' or 'cause significant inconvenience' to the seller. Examples of this would be if a repair would be as effective as a replacement, or if a price reduction would be more appropriate for minor defects.

Bear in mind that as of 31st March 2003, the onus is on the dealer to prove that the vehicle was of satisfactory quality when it was sold. This means that the buyer no longer needs to seek an independent inspection.

However, if you believe that your car has a fault, and wish to take it further with the dealer, you must stop using the car immediately, and contact the dealer directly. You also need to follow this up in writing, providing evidence of any problems.

Good luck

I had lots of problems with a new Peugeot a few years ago. I had to be very out of character to get anywhere coz if you're Mr Niceguy, they will walk all over you. I found a letter to the MD and a discussion regarding your problems with the manager, in the showroom when busy was very productive. Be sure to NOT lose your temper, don't (whatever you do) swear or make any threats ie legal unless you're sure of the validity of them, but be firm and make sure you get everything promised (in front of other prospective buyers) in writing. Resist going into his/her office, these guys are good and will sweet talk you if they can.

Hope this helps. Persevere, you've paid a lot of money for a product that can be sorted out.

Good luck, regards, Ian

Never been possible on Scarlet - the two profiles are just too different.

I put up with a few leaks when the top is on and have the windows adjusted for the hood. Tried everything over the years, but the bottom line is in my case the hardtop just doesn't fit. :-(

I tend to agree with SF except mine is currently the other way round - Hardtop fits well while softtop is leaking after fitting new rubber seals. Don't have time at present to play around to reverse it so hardtop is on and I'm hoping I don't meet anybody I know.

Was a bit of a problem on the recent Cotswolds Run when we were 1 of only 2 who couldn't put the top down.
