MG MGF Technical - Does £270 sound a lot

My VVC is coming on for six years old and I have a constant loss of water following HGF last year.

Anyway I have decided to get my radiator and pipes changed and have been quoted £270 including parts, labour and vat. The thing is they tell me it only takes about an hour to do and so assuming the parts are not that expensive it seems a lot.

Also has anyone bothered with the alu pipes supplied by Mike. I'm sure they will last longer but if the standard items last another six years I don't mind, I might not have the car then.
T Graveling

Just had mine done :- parts (re-cored rad, underbody pipes, couple of hoses etc) cost about 190 UKP; so the 270 UKP sounds OK.
Make sure they check the whole cooling system - including the hoses.
I didn't get the MS underbody pipes; I doubt the bodyshell will last another six years.
Steve

My paying an extra £100 doesn’t sound OK to me. Where did you get it done, at a MG dealer or other?

Thank's for advice.

Why? are you planning on driving it into somthing?
Will Munns

I've got Mike's alloy coolant pipes on my car. Not sure what I can say about them - they're long, cylindrical, and they hold water ;oD ROFL Only been on the car a few months, so can't make any comments on longevity.

Tech-Speed; MGR will charge more for a replacement radiator, and more for labour. If the quote includes replacing any hose that's doubtful then it's OK(ish).

I've got yogurts that are stiffer than the MGF bodyshell.

Where did you get the rad re-cored?
and was it standard spec or bigger volume?

Tech-Speed provided the service - somewhere local to them. It's standard spec. - I'm not convinced that bigger volume is required, although better control of cooling probably is required.
Steve

Think Tech-Speed use a place up in Leicester to re-core rads - had mine done a year ago (think it cost roughly £60-80) been fine since.

Steve's price is stated as parts only, unless I am reading it wrong. In which case you dealer is adding £80 labour which would equate to about 2 hours, about right I s'pose.

I too have a re-cored rad via Techspeed, and standard replacement under body pipes, I didn't bother with the alu ones as the standards are about 1/3 the price and at app.7 years per set I am looking at 21 years to break even (roughly speaking of course) I am sure that the MS ones are great but why add needless expense to a job.
Phil Brindley (Work)

I have my car in the garage after losing coolant, turns out it is a hole in the radiator caused by a stone hitting it. I was quoted £260 for the job, half of that was for labour and half for the parts of a new radiator.
Jo

Did I say £270, I have just checked and B&G are quoting around £330.

Is it just me or does that sound a lot, I was expecting around £200.
T Graveling

Yeah my rad had a hole in it perhaps from a stone
perhaps from corrosion

it is very rotten at the bottom
to the extent that the ally lugs that slot into the rubber holes in the subframe have rotted to nothing!

the body panels of course are immaculate!
sort of reverse italian engineering i suppose.

MS big capacity rad £158 quid
I thought that was a lot too
cant remember the last time i bought a rad, ususally have them recored
