MG MGF Technical - DOHC or not?
Can anyone advise me please. The 1.8 vvc is a DOHC engine I am understand. Is the 1.8 MPI a single OHC motor? Many thanks for your time. Chris |
Chris |
Chris, They are both DOHC,but the VVC has variable valve timing wheras the MPI has fixed cams. Robert |
R J Hemphill |
the VVC is triple cam if I understand it correctly |
Will Munns |
The VVC is Very Very Complicated |
Johan Slagter |
The VVC is very very Clever!!!!! |

Some of the smaller capacity k Series engines are single OHC |

To add further confusion : A well known quiz on rallies; "How many cams on a MFG VVC ?" Answer: 5 in all, 4 on the inlet and one outlet cam. / Carl. |
Carl Blom |
Hi Carl, How many Camshafts, I hope, as there are 16 cams on the VVC and mpi - as you well know! Regards, Kes - just nit-picking. |
Kes |
Hi Kes, yes- of course - but for me cam is the whole unit as short for "camshaft". Difficult this language.... When we are at it, ever so often I see the word "breake" instead of "brake". Is this an accepted english spelling of the word brake as in brakepads etc ? BR, Carl. |
Carl Blom |
>Is this an accepted english spelling No, it's common english mispelling! Four inlet cams? is that one per cylinder - or is there some sort of caming the camshaft (IYSWIM) |
Will Munns |
My understanding is that the inlet side has 2 half hollow camshafts and 2 other camshafts which pass through the middle; at first appearances it therefore looks like only 2 camshafts but it's actually 4. There's a good site explaining it all somewhere, I'll try to find the link... Tim. |
Tim Jenner |
Not the link I was looking for, but there's an explaination on this very site... "The first obvious thing one sees is that the inlet camshaft is not a single casting as in most engines, but is in four sections. Inlet valves for cylinders 1 and 2 are controlled by lobes on a half cam-shaft driven by a VVC Mechanism (the most important components of which are two drive rings) at the front of the engine. Inlet valves for cylinders 3 and 4 are controlled by lobes on a half cam-shaft driven by a second VVC Mechanism (incorporating its own drive rings) at the rear of the engine, the drive for the latter is taken from the exhaust camshaft." See http://www.mgcars.org.uk/news/news174.html |

So that'll make the VVC a POHC... |
Rob Bell |
Yep i agree, 1.8 K4 MPi is DOHC, 1.8 K4 VVC is QOHC DOHC is dead!, Long live the quin-cam!!! LOL :-) SF |

The VVC still says "Twin Cam" on the cam covers though...maybe we could get some replacements made up! :) |
Tim Jenner |
Okay, quin sounds better than pent-cam Andy - and is probably more correct too! ROFL >> maybe we could get some replacements made up! :) << LOL Tim - yup, that'd be kewl! 8o) |
Rob Bell |
I'm still waiting for someone to come up with some MG branded spark plug covers (like the Lotus ones) - hint hint! |
Tim Jenner |
I feel the same Tim :-) SF |
