MG MGF Technical - Door handles don't work :(
Got back to the car today to find the drivers door handle doesn't work anymore, inside or outside so have to climb over the passenger seat to get in and out, the door seems to unlock (pin shoots up) but the handles just feel loose like they do when the car is locked. any ideas what's wrong and if i can fix myself? Thanks |

Kingsley, Ive had this twice on my 2001 1.8i. First time (pretended I was Starsky & Hutch & climbed in through the window!) it was the drivers side lock that had to be replaced & the second time I had both door locks replaced!!!!!!!! Thank god for the warranty, £65 per lock otherwise. The problem I was told is the microswitch in the lock mechanism gets wet, corrodes & is basically then useless. I put it down to washing the end of the doors and water was running through the door and destroying the switch. I now take greater care when washing &, touch wood have had no probs since. Happy 'F'ing.... |

Both door locks, is this an option I only have one. |

Chris, if you only have one door lock you should consult the place you bought the car from and demand the rest of your car. However you, like most other Fs have only one door lock key hole :-) |

Kingsley, I've had the same thing twice, and both times it turned out to be bolt that had come loose on the handle on the inside of the door. This bolt keeps the lever in place that opens the doorlock, when the bolt comes loose the handle slides over the lever so it won't open |

It started working again today so i'm going to take it apart tomorow to see if i can figure it out |

Very similar problem had it all over Christmas when you tryed to open the door with the fob it would only open passengers side door so out with the old WD40 there it worked I thought this is Bloody great stuff next day same problem not to worry it going in for a service £186 to change the oil and stamp the book.Whilst in the garage the door would not work yet again so they said it needs a door latch at £ 148 fitted of course not willing to part with that amount of cash I came home and off with the door panel IT WAS THERE ALL THE TIME 2 WET CONNECTORS THE WATER PASSING DOWN THE WINDOW RUBBER .So out with theWD40 cleaned up added a sheet of plastic to deflect the water away from the connectors all ok and saved £148 hope this helps P.S MAY HAVE TO LOOK AT PASSENGER DOOR |

This happened to me the other day, as Johan says it's probably the metal lever that's screwed onto the back of the handle assembly. When you lift the handle the plastic lug on the back of the moving part pushes down on a lever which pivots around a self tapping screw in the back of the surround. If the screw comes undone slightly the lever just gets pushed out of the way instead of operating the door catch. Strip the door trim off and the offending screw can be tightened without having to remove the handle from the door. |

Obviously the quality of these components has not improved over the years. I had three door lock motors replaced in the 4.5 years I had my F. |

No nothing to do with screws in the door its the connectors in the drivers door that get wet causing the central door locking to stop working .HOPE THIS HELPS |

it could be any one of the probelms above it is more likely to be the door latch internal release sticking..Flick the interior handle and see if it makes any difference!!!! mike (MG tech going on 8 long years) |

Replaced both door latches at xmas £ 125 for both. My symptoms were constant interior lighting. Doors and alarm worked fine. Just couldnt get the lights off apart from when arming the alarm system. I tried taking both apart, stripping them down, cleaning the micro switches etc but it didnt help. Without knowing which side was faulty, I ordered both sides from the dealer, with the idea of taking the lock which would not be needed back for a refund. As sods law would have it, changed the drivers side first. Still faulty, changed the passengers side....hey presto, fault cured. Rather than strip the drivers side down again I just left the lock in. It would only be a matter of time before it went faulty anyway according to archived postings on the subject. One guy I know has had 3 locks in his drivers door alone. |
