MG MGF Technical - Door hinge/door alignment

I just been cleaning the car and noticed that the shut line on the drivers door is getting a bit tight below the door handle adjacent to the sill (less than 1mm). This also means that the top edge of the door does not align with the rear deck.

I'm sure it is a fairly simple matter of undoing the hinges and fiddling around.

Has anyone had experience of this.

(Ted I think you might have a handle on this one)

I still have to replace A frame seals and re-align the windows but I might as well do it all at once.

At first the door !! Then the windows and sills.

Just did it this afternoon, but I only needed to re-align the slot brackets.

The hinge bolts are only to get accessed at the door side *move in and out seen from top* IMO. You need to remove the wings to get to the chassis side bolts of the hinges.

Anyway, I got rid of the step between door and rear wing by moving the slot bracket 3mm upwards and 2mm inwards.
Torx 40 required and some patience. Mark the slot bracket location with a felt pen before you start.

Window adjustment on the RH side will follow now or on monday.

Dieter <-- off to remove the door panels for installing tweeters and having a look to the adjust bolts :)

As Dieter says the hinge adjustment on the door side is in and out only, the up and down - back and forwards adjustment is done from behind the wing and according to the workshop manual you can get at these bolts by removing the wing liners (not the wings).

Dieter, When you talk about the 'slot bracket' do you mean the locking mechanism......?

Ted/Dieter, Following your comments I take it that the bolts between hinge and door are non-adjustable.

I think that this might be a major project for the sunny days of summer...

Hi,

http://www.mgfcar.de/adjust/slot_cp_0463.jpg
Is what I translated as 'slot bracket'. Pleasew don't hestitate correcting to making sense description :)

And no, the hinges are just bolted flat to the chassis and the door. So if you loosen the bolts either at the door or as mentioned behind the wheel arch liner then you can adjust the door.
- Door sode bolts to moving in and out (IMO)
- chassis side bolts to moving up and down (IMO)
Never tried, but I'll do next, cause I did not get the windows adjusted this morning as I wanted to get them.
At mine the door (location hinge/mirror cheater) versus front wing upper level (near screen frame/A-post) has a 3mm step.
Window can't be moved any more downwards by adjusting the window from inside the door, so I'll lower the door at the hinge by this 3mm. (remove wheel and wheel arch liner).

Anyway, o project also for any of the next weekends.
Meanwhile I added some more pictures to the site.

BTW. I tried window adjustment with the german version of the workshop manual.....
Dooh, whar a sh*t translation. There is I think the english is much more making sense. Though I still did not get what they mean (location D and E as well as H and G)

Dieter.

Great stuff.... I think that I'm armed with enough information to make quite a good stab at adjusting my window and doors for once and for all.

Yep, you can adjust the door clearance/gap by moving the locking bracket on the door post. Easy to do, but as Dieter says, mark the original location with a marker pen first.

Tim,
all included in the workshop manual Edition 3 :)
Looking foreward to a description that I could really understand *g*

Steve, thanks for the 'locking bracket'. Added to my 2000 words covering english dictionary :)

Still waiting for my copy of the workshop manual. I've had it on back order for 3 months now, could it be that they have stop printing it since the TF came out.......? :-(
